This annoyed the crap out of me:

You get done uploading hundreds of gigs of photos to them for backup, and then they pull this crap. *sigh* I feel like an idiot for recommending them to as many people as I did. The weird thing is that none of their competitors have raised their prices -- you can still go to Carbonite or Crashplan and get unlimited backup storage for as low a price as Mozy used to offer. I just hate that I have to re-upload 400 freaking gigs of data.

Yeah all I can say is WOW. They just lost me as a customer. I have unlimited subscript for 2 pc's and that cost on the old plan $208 for 2 years. With the new plan that price increase to $1680. Absolutely absurd.

I sent a support case to them telling them I will not be renweing, I suggest everybody do this so they can see how many customers they are now loosing.

Actually, what you need to do is ask them for a cancellation and a pro-rated refund for the time not used. I hear they are giving those out if you ask.

I bet they are losing money and are trying to boost the bank balance, hoping people just pay-up to keep all their valuable data safe.
These days, a lot of new companies have a reasonable 'introductory offer' to get loads of people to sign-up and then later on put the prices up, but that's quite a jump!

This is one reason I don't use on-line storage, you are not in control of it.

I'd be worried about them going out of business...

Their TV commercials must have worked.

It may not end. Others may follow.

(A good time to consider investing in Seagate or Western Digital stock ;) :) )

But they will just loose a lot of customers on it but if what Mozy says about 10% using 90% of their storage then they can expect to get a huge portion of that released as these power users move away. I guess I am in that category with my 800 GB.

No surprise. the costs for cloud storage are really cheap, but not THAT cheap.

If you're a "power user" I think these companies actually want you to leave and that's why they're coming up with these new price structures. By leaving, you're doing them a favor and freeing up space for 10 more "normal" customers. For the non-power users, the new price structure won't affect them nearly as much so most will probably stay.

Yes, but as pointed out in the article, move away to where? You might get a brief respite, but if industry analysts are correct and others follow the trend, large gig-users will run out of places to go.

Edit: no one knows for sure whether other services will follow the trend and if so, how quickly. However, cloud storage mega-giggers should probably start formulating alternative plans.

Yes based on the article I read you are correct. They want to get rid of the 10% that use 90% space. I just don't think they realise the consequence that many regular users look to the power users for advice. For me I will no longer recomend Mozy to anybody regardless of amount of data they need to backup.

Move to using external hd's and storing them off site.

I cant believe people actually thought they could have unlimited storage forever for just a little cost. It is more than obvious that it is not a sound and sustainable business plan. Its one that was doomed from the start.

I guess the bright side is they didnt just shut down and screw everybody out of their backups.

I use a lockable fire/water safe for storage of my data/images, and other important stuff. No need to move stuff offsite. These safes are.....well, safe. ;)

just a few of my thoughts...
