I normally use OSX and Aperture - I've never really used anything else.

This weekend, I'm going to be at an event with a Windows laptop, and plan on downloading my photos directly to it (backed up to an external drive) as it'll be three days away from my main iMac.

What software can I use to do light editing, and display a slideshow, on my Windows laptop?

I've never even touched the Canon software - can it handle light RAW editing and slideshow duties?

For developing and editing RAW files: Canon Digital Photo Professional (came with your camera).

For organizing and editing of TIFFs (and JPGs) as well as slideshows: Windows Live Photo Gallery (free download, Google knows where to get it). Picasa is another freebie option for editing.

I'll install the Canon utility - thanks! I don't know why I didn't think of Picasa ... thanks!

Come to think of it, DPP will also edit TIFFs and JPGs, but no slideshow function as far as I know.

Or run a trial of Lightroom. It sounds like you will only have to use this laptop for a few days. The LR trial is 30 days.

It looks like Picasa can handle RAW files once I've got the Canon tools installed - that will do for my purposes - it leaves the .cr2's on the drive, which will work for me when I get home and import them to my iMac and Aperture.

Thanks!

ummmm...If you have Aperture 3, it will already handle everything you stated!

For the slide show, you can basically do that in Aperture, but easier to just import to iPhoto and do it from there after processing.

I know - but I'm not carrying my 27" iMac on location with me - I'll be taking a laptop running Windows 7 instead, Aperture is OSX only.

Depending on the native size/resolution of your laptop you may need to increase the screen resolution a bit for DPP -- when you run the installation it will notify you if the resolution is not sufficient so you would exit the install, go to the Display Properties by right-ckicking on the Background, and change it to the specs, then restart the install.

It installed fine - it's a 17" Dell, no worries there.

I think my workflow will simply be to dump my cards into Picasa, storing the CR2s on the drive. I'll back them up to an external drive.

when I get home, I'll copy them to Aperture to do my processing.

Thanks for the recommendations and direction folks!
