Unfortunately scanning the picture won't do, my scaner is able to do only 300dpi and if I crank it any higher it gives me an error. I guess a good time to invest in a better scanner :)

I will try to find a fee service that would let me upload the entire original JPEG so you can test it on your printer if you'd be so kind.

P.S. When chaning the printer setup to the paper profile (PT1) here is what it comes out as:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

open your print in Photp Shop.
go to image/image size from the top menue bar and set the 4"X6" and 240ppi.
then go to edit and "convert to profile" and set to sRGB
then hit the print command
set photo shop manages colors and set your printer profile, you'll have 2 choices for your paper "Canon Pro9000 Mark II <PT> 1 Photo Paper Pro Platinum"
rendering intent should be okay where it is set.
Now open your print driver and select your media type/paper and while in the print driver set color management to none. hit ok and you should now be set to print.

Atlrus--- I have done tech support for a large real estate group for many years. On many occasions I have had to say "Stop thinking out loud and only listen to MY words. Follow my instructions verbatim."

Mr Al has the same printer and is instructing you on how to use it.

I did this and while the preview (and actual picture) has improved from before, now it's on the same level as when printing from the Canon software, i.e. the picture is still overall darker than it shows on PS.

I have a small HP 4x6 printer that I have to get back from a friend and I will print the same picture to see if it will come better than the Canon.

P.S. I may as well calibrate the monitor, so which software do you recommend using that will give me the best bang for the buck?

I would recommend getting the X-Rite EyeOne Display2.

Even before calibrating, you should follow the earlier suggestion to lower your brightness. I don't know what kind of monitor you have, but the Brightness should be lower than 50%.

I don't have a Canon printer but I've heard there are problems using the Print Preview function -- can anyone fill in here with some details? That Print Preview looks pretty ugly compared to the nice image shown in Photoshop.

"Preview before printing" is a known issue with Canon printers. It's often responsible for color shifts and reddish casts in prints. I noticed that even the Red River Paper website warns about it in their printer settings instructions.
