Hi all. I am new to the G3 and I thought I would take some shots of my daughter and post the best one. I would like some input on what you think of the picture. Thanks

Gosh! What great quality in this picture...
What are the settings you used for this, and did you edit this photo in any way? I am really curious...

And heh, must say your kids are cute..

Thanks for sharing the photo. I liked the shot. I hope this doesn't overwhelm, but here's some of my thoughts. Cutting off the very top of the couch works. It tells the viewers the couch is not the photographs subject, yet adds richness to the picture. Horizontally, I would have leveled the left and right sides to show balanced wall space. As it is, it looks like your camera was tilted when you took the picture. Vertically, I would have centered the couch on each side of the girls--there is empty space to the left of the girls but on the right it looks like the girls feet are pushing against the edge of the print. I liked your capturing the girls focusing other than at the camera. Overall, the pictures focus would have worked better to my eye if the girls faces stood out more, rather than the front of the picture (feet and front of the couch). The girls, dressed in black and white works with the patterns and colors of the couch and pillows. A minor visual element that I found distracting was the pillow tag to the right of the girls. You're working in the right direction. The photo held my interest. Cute kids!

An earlier post recommended National Geographic Field Guide--I have the book and would recommend it. It covers not only the technical aspects but also elements of photographic composition. My favorite part of the book is the N.G. photographer comments. Also, take a look at the Kodak Guide to 35mm Photography. Your appreciation for photography will increase with these books! They are both informative and enjoyable. Check the Amazon reviews if you can't see them at a bookstore.
