This line in the article cracks me up: "Mozy's vice president of product marketing, Russ Stockdale, told me that although three out of four of its customers' accounts stay well below 50GB, a minority of rotten apples who take the "unlimited" at face value have spoiled it for the rest of the bunch by uploading terabytes of digital video, photos, and music."

IOW, "Yea, I know we said unlimited, but we really meant 50 GB or less, and the 25% of our customers who had the unmitigated gall to believe what we said are just evil!"

How dare you want unlimited storage by purchasing an unlimited plan!

No bragging list - I just rent whatever the job requires.

this is just like cell phone plans that offer unlimited data, but if you read the fine print - it's not unlimited...

Nice selective quoting there.

"Mozy's vice president of product marketing, Russ Stockdale, told me that although three out of four of its customers' accounts stay well below 50GB, a minority of users who take the "unlimited" at face value have uploaded vast amounts of digital video, photos, and music. The implication to me was that these few rotton apples' taking up many terabytes of transfer and storage spoiled it for the rest of us by forcing Mozy to revise its pricing policies. "

The "few rotten apples'...." is the author interpreting what Stockdale said, and was not a direct quote from Stockdale.

Actually, you are right. I was reading quickly and missed, "The implication to me was that..."

As for options (for photos) - I use my pro smugmug account. I have password protected galleries in a catagory called 'back ups" and everything goes in there....

I back my photos up on external drives, but I liked the idea of online storage in case of something like a fire and such.

Considering I use 5 - 64G CF cards when I travel, and always come back with them full, I would have to agree with you :-P

I have crashplan. I have been happy so far, but it is not something I test on a regular basis. ;)

I have 3 PCs backing up to a local linux box. Then my PC with my photos is backed up to Crashplan's site.

That way I have a local copy in case of a PC crash and a remote copy in case of a disaster.
