Hi, I'm primarily a Lightroom user, using it to do most of my edits. I now have CS5, and I wondering what folks use CS5 for when they need something more than what LR3 can handle (for example, panoramas). I would like to ease into CS5 and focus initially on the cool stuff it can do, and LR can't. Thanks.

OK, then "things which you can't do the LR3". What's your point?

Photoshop can only do two things:

1. Select pixels
2. Modify the Hue, Saturation, or Luminosity of the selected pixels.

While Lightroom has some ability to select, its no where near as efficient as Photoshop in selecting pixels. So any creative task that requires you to select pixels can be done in Photoshop; the same cannot be said for Lightroom.

Cool stuff? It depends on your creative vision.

Do you have both CS5 and LR3 and then make choice which app to use?

Yes.

I use LR2 and 3 and PSCS4 / DPP

Depends: Do you need all the images in the catalog? > Use LR.
Do you just need the finished image (or none) in the catalog? > Use ACR (Or DPP) + PS.

Yes, I have both Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3.

It all depends on what I intend to do...if I'm processing a batch of raw files I'm likely to use Lightroom, then Photoshop on those in the batch that I think merit additional attention/processing.

If I have a one-off project, like a file I downloaded from this site, I start processing it in Adobe Camera Raw then transfer it to Photoshop. But again, it all depends; if I'm only making global changes - edits that apply to an entire photo - those can easily be done in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw. If I want to do more involved processing like changing a background that must be done in Photoshop since it involves selecting pixels.

What's your point

Merely wondering why you would buy a relatively expensive piece of software without knowing why you want it.

I use cs5 to do all the cool stuff. Don't care much for LR3 yet.

Pick up some books or watch videos online, that might help you understand more.

Yeah, I was planning on do that. Adobe TV seems to have lot of videos. I guess one of the first "cool" things I would like to try is HDR.

The good news is that there are several ways with which you can bring one or more images from Lightroom into Photoshop so that you can do that "cool stuff":)!

What exactly you do with an image in Photoshop depends partly on whether you want to do a job that you just can't do in Lightroom or whether you (like some here) prefer doing some tasks in Photoshop that they could do in Lightroom for whatever reason.

Since you have Photoshop, I'd say a good approach would be to start doing some serious reading and tutorials. Adobe TV is a good place to start, and then take a look at Lynda.com, which is a paid subscription but with a week-long free trial and is very highly recommended, as well as KelbyTraining. All those sites also offer Lightroom tutorials as well -- you don't say how experienced you are with LR but learning is always a good thing.

There are books galore on both Photoshop and Lightroom, including how to integrate the two so you can effectively do cool things!
