Hi guys,

Not sure if anyone of you guys have had this problem, but my 85mm II's panel near the AF/MF switch has cracked sunk in slightly, and it creaks slightly when I switch between AF/MF, which I always do since the DOF is so thin.

Switch still works though, and the lens performs flawlessly except for the slight niggle.

Was wondering if anyone has actually replaced the panel before? I shoot sports so water resistance is an issue here.

Thanks!

5d and 85L for sports... interesting... Just like pedobear over the canon logo haha. I have only seen this once and the owner didn't really care about it. Best guess is to check what canon would recommend

I do have a 1DIIn as well, I usually take triathlons and most run events since I work for a company dealing with triathlon and run apparel, so usually I find a nice spot, pre-focus on a specific point and snap.

It's just a hobby though, and will use the lens for other purposes like family portraiture and street. :)

 Actually 85L makes probably a perfect combo with a 300L2.8 .. same type of DOF, micro contrast, colors depth ... and AF is perfectly accurate for many type of sports (dog agility, motor races, ... any tracking sports)

Just some samples 10 days ago for a Job on a race in Hossegor (atlantique) in FullHD (by clicking on the pictures) ...

and between f1.2 and f1.8 DOF suits exactly the size of a pilote and his quad bike

I will sell my 135L as i get more advantage to use a 85L (I can get night shot much easier, as I can focus when 135L is just hunting)

So what do you do just pre focus first? I'll have to give this a try since I only use my 85L for portrait.

Not really necessary, on a 50D focus is nearly instant and accurate. On a 5DMKII it's a bit longer to catch, but not incompatible with those sports. But results are really different from the usual 70-200L2.8ISII ..

I think most people are confusing time from MFD to infinity and real life !!! .. (it never happens that you would need to focus instntly from 0.9m to infinity)
Basically, you just track pilots around the same distance (3m to 12m) and focus of the 85L in this range is absolutely instant and 100% accurate and DOF is appropriate the the subject (it covers 100% of the pilot at F1.2). For more than 10m I use my 300L2.8 mounted on a 5DMKII
