Yesterday I picked up my 7D with the Sigma 30mm and decided to take a few snaps of the dog, and wham, after about 3 shots, I get the ERR 30 message. I followed the directions and removed the battery (and the little button battery as well) and even swapped batteries (to a fresh one) and put a different lens on. 3 or so clicks, boom, ERR 30. I've only had the camera since mid November, so there are only about 3k clicks, so I'm a little upset by this. I've searched the forum but didn't come up with a whole lot of people who've encountered this issue with a camera with relatively few actuations. I'll be getting in contact with Canon today to figure out what to do. Anyone with any advice? Kind words to make me feel better? LOL.

That sucks.... bright side: at least you have a XS backup body you can use while the camera is in the shop.

That's really too bad Dan, let us know what the final results will be.

The upside is that I do have my Rebel as a back up. The downside (aside from the obvious) is that this upcoming weekend I am acquiring some basic studio lighting that I was going to begin learning how to use. AND I am supposed to do a mini maternity shoot with my little sister sometime soon.

the XS will be able to handle the Materinity shoot it is a mighty fine camera! You can get outstanding results with it. I know that it sucks and I would be flaming that I could not use my 7D also, but try to keep your head on you and use your knowledge to capture the moment for her.

Very true. Very true. I found my Rebel quite capable. Funny how a $499 kit has gone through thousands and thousands of pictures without even so much as a hiccup, and a $1600 body gives me issues after 3 months. I guess it is more complex, therefore there is more to go wrong. Crappy luck I guess.

I concur my friend - crappy luck and if I was you I would be fuming as well. I pray that my 60D that I just bought never gives me any trouble - my XTi was rock solid, I sold it to help fund my 60D - so I dont even have a back up!

I look forward to seeing the pictures that the XS captures - I know they will be quite lovely ;)

I would've said that it could be the lens, but I saw that you changed lenses and still got the error.
That sucks...hope you get it worked out....

*mini update* - Went to the store where I purchased the camera to get a reprint of the sales receipt (somehow I misplaced the original) and talked to they guy. Since I paid the nominal fee for "lifetime service", he said I should take the camera over to their service center and they'll handle the details of sending the camera in for repair. Hopefully the guy wasn't just feeding me a line of BS just to get me out of his hair. I'm dropping the camera off today after work. Keeping my fingers crossed...

Please let us know what the outcome was from that error. I plan to purchase a 7d in May and would like to know as much info as i can. Good luck on the maternity shoot, the XS and lighting should do fine!

Per Canon, the error is as follows:

Err 30: A shutter malfunction has been
detected.

Canon's recommendation:
-Turn the power switch to <ON> to turn on the
power again.
-Remove and re-install the battery.
-Use a Canon lens.
-If the instructions above do not solve the
problem, please contact your nearest Canon
Service Center.

I read that as well; and it will be going to the nearest Canon Service Center. It is making its way there via the local retailer where I purchased the camera. That was one of the factors why I purchased it locally. Let them deal with it.

Better make sure of that. Chain stores have their own repair centers, that's the reason they try to sell an extended warranty.........pure profit. I'd want to see it went to Canon in writing.

Fortunately my local retailer is not a chain. The guy told me it'd be sent to the New Jersey Canon repair center. Believe me, I spent enough of my hard earned $$ on this body, so I'm pretty cautious about stuff like this.
