I got a Gitzo tripod from a recent Amazon sale. Now I need to mate it with a good head. I've searched and will settle on the Markins Q3T in blue (just to be different). However, the blue only comes with a screw release which I dislike. So I'd like to swap it out for the lever quick release. I'm torn between the Markins and RRS versions. I have 0 (zero) plates, so I can go either way. What would be best? I'm looking to get 2 plates as well. No interest in L-plate yet. Would like to be able to use it with future monopod.

I've had both and have had no problem with either. The Markins is a bit more compact for folding legs around it.

Also, the Markins is adjustable for any bracket manufacturer. The RSS is meant to be used with RRS brackets.

Slightly off topic (I'm a massive screw release fan) make sure your blue Q3T is the second version with proper separation between the main knob and the little panning lock knob. Markins USA doesn't seem to sell the blue one any more...

If you can wait until tomorrow, I am getting the q3t (RED) with markins lever release and I already have a bh-55 with rrs lever so I can compare and let you know which is better.

It comes down to preference. Most people seem to use them with the lever in the front under the lens, as it can hit your chin if used in the back. Also, in the front, there is less chance of something catching the lever and unintentionally opening the release.

Not really, just whatever works best for you and/or doesnt interfere with anything else.

I have a RRS quick release, been using it for over a year with a BH-55 and Gitzo legs. I really like the RRS QR, nice heavy lever, adjustable, and it's a solid click when in place. Technically your supposed to have the level facing away from you, so you can see the center level on the ball head plate, but it's really personal preference.

I never used a screw lock mount, but I can say that if you do go with RRS, as with any quick releases, you need to make sure it's in the locked position. When using the RRS plate, I like to have the QR opened all of the way, with the level fully flipped open. This way I can place the camera plate in the middle, then lock it down. You can open it part way, slide the camera plate in, but I think it's faster to open all the way.

Locking down the camera plate is simple but I like to make sure the camera is centered (easy to do since RRS offers "zero" markers on plates/mounts) also that there is proper tension on the lever. If the plate is not correctly plates, for example the notches are not in the gap, pinching the plate, the lever will be extremely hard to move. If you take photos in a dirty environment, I'm sure this would also be the case, if dirt or grit got on the plate.

Now once locked down, it's pretty hard to unlock by accident. I used a Manfrotto head and plate combo for years, and this QR level was easy to move BUT it had a safety latch. Just my experience, with any QR type plates, especially something lever based you need to make sure it's solid before letting go.

I have not used any screw style QR plates, but I think the amount they need to open/close based upon the gap of my lever QR plate would take some time to mount and unmount the camera.

I have a related-topic question:

I'm using the Markins Q3t with lever release clamp. If I buy a RRS plate for my 1D3, will it not fit?

I always have the lever at the rear even though it puts the integrated spirit level towards the front and out of sight (though with a camera mounted the view of the spirit level is obscured anyway) because often with lenses attached a front facing lever can have a difficult time clearing mounting rings and such.

It will fit. RRS plates will fit on Markins clamps and vice versa. Both companies adhere to the Arca-Swiss standard with their plate hardware.

The reason is that the Markins lever release is adjustable to any plate system, whereas the RRS lever release is not. RRS recommends using their lever QR only with RRS or Wimberly plates.
