I called B&H today and got a very mixed answer from 2 different salesman about whether the 1D Mark III could use the Sigma 30mm 1.4.

One salesman said. It was considered a full frame and the other told me it was a crop. I know it has a crop of 1.3 but they couldn't tell me if the sigma would work with this camera. I was shocked. I have read on hear that the sigma won't work with the Mark III.

So I guess my biggest question is. When looking for a lens, am I suppose to be looking for lenses for a full frame camera?

Hope someone can help clear this up for me:) Thanks

Yes.

EF-S lenses are designed specifically for a 1.6 crop sensor and may catch the mirror or vignette on a larger sensor. 'Crop' lenses from the independents are likely to be similar.

That doesn't mean that they can't be used, but may need modifying to fit and you may get vignetting or be unable to use all the zoom range. I have seen posts from people who have modified EF-S lenses to work on FF.

In the defence of the B&H people, it is hard to know exactly how every piece of kit they sell will work with other pieces of kit. They would need to know Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Tokina etc., etc., Technically, they were both right (it is a crop but is considered to need FF lenses). If they both said that they didn't know if the sigma 30mm would work, then they are just stating that it might but they can't say yes for certain. As I say, some crop lenses may work OK with minimal vignetting, it depends on the design for each lens. Without having tried it, they gave you an honest answer, they don't know.

Theoretically, it won't work properly, but it might if they designed it with an image circle a bit bigger than actually needed for a 1.6 crop sensor.

Yes, always look for lenses for FF.

Sigma 30 is okay up to f4 on 1.3x. From there you start to get dark corners. If I remember correct @1.4 there isn't even much vignetting. I have 28@1.8 on 1d3. Nice, but miss the sigma 50@1.4 I had on 5d. May get a 30mm. 35L is out of my league. 28 has very nice mfd though. So not sure the 30 will be worth it, as I think the 50 may be a league above the the 30.

And for those who are puzzled by the above comment, it is explained by the fact that that Image Circle diameter tends to get larger with increasing smaller f/stops.

Thank you so much for the comments, this was very helpful.
Sandpiper, I hear your point with B&H and agree.

A point of clarification, the only lens type you have to be careful regarding smacking the mirror on non-APS-C bodies are the Canon EFS lenses, but these would require modifying to even be able to mount them. All other lenses will mount without an issue, but could vignette.

Well based on this information. I think I am going to give the canon 28mm 1.8 a whirl. I have the 85mm 1.8 but it's to tight for indoors.
If anyone has any other suggestions for a good lens in this range let me know... :)
