OK so not to mess up your thoughts completely but what about the possibility of getting a 200mm F/1.8 and if you do have the money also getting a 400mm F/2.8 IS version?

The 200 holds a 1.4 xtender between your camera body and itself very, very well.

You will have all the range you would need as with the 1.4x-tender it essentially becomes a 280 f/2.5 and all the light you need indoors and out.

You will not sacrifice in any way sharpness.

That's my 2 cents worthless...

Not bad ross. But I want more length. If you notice I have a 300 2.8 already.

For me shooting sports events I will need 300 and 400, therefore I suggest keep the 300 and buy another 400. For new IS II lenses don't think about it unless you earn enough money to justify it with your photographer business. Or you really need light weight because you couldn't carry it ;)

Lots Nikon pro using 200-400 f4 lens in sports events, but for Canon I worry about the image quality in high ISO with f4 lens..... D3s high ISO image really clean  when they showed me the images

Well, soon or later you will need 400 ! But doesn't mean you don't need 300~ For me both all important when shooting sports events
