So comforting to know that so many "good guys" are turning up to these transactions with guns in their pockets. Where are we the wild west?

If your that paranoid you might do better with shipping the goods and paying with Paypal - no one needs to die that way.

Sites such as these http://photo.net/registry/ (external link) would be great if people used them. I have checked them before buying high dollar items, but so few victims bother posting on them - they just collect the insurance check, lick their wounds and move on in most cases. It's surprising the insurers (who become the legal owners of stolen property) don't post.

meet in a bank lobby. Secured and the seller can check immediately that the money is not false.

Yeah, but it's probably not a good idea to take your gun into a bank! :D

I can't tell you about Connecticut, but I live in South Florida. When you spend 40+ years down here, then you can ask yourself that very same question and see what answer you come up with. I know what answer I came up with and that's why I legally carry a concealed weapon. To each his own...

I've been living in CT for 27 years and I find that it's very safe...for the most part. But after two attempted muggings in Hartford within the past three years, I assure you the reason I carry a pistol is not paranoia.

A unfortunate reality is that big city police departments do not have time to deal with something like this, so it is unlikely that anything will ever be done. Besides, if the person it was stolen from hasn't filed a police report (with serial numbers), then nothing could be done even if the police were on the scene.

Bryan

There's no doubt in my mind that the NYPD would do nothing but file a report on this . . . lol

I just completed my first-ever Craigslist purchase two weeks ago. Based upon all of the horror stories I've read about Craigslist transactions, I followed three main recommendations:

1) Meet in a very public place. Our transaction took place in front of Barnes & Noble in a very busy strip mall.
2) Don't go alone. A long-time friend of mine met me there and was my sidekick throughout the whole transaction.
3) Since you've got one pocket full of cash, keep a loaded gun in your other pocket. I have a CWP, so it's all legal.

Fortunately for me, everything went extremely well with this transaction. This doesn't mean that future transactions will go this well, so I won't let my guard down and I will always make sure to cover my safety points.

The best thing to do is meet inside, not the parking lot, of a busy place, like Starbucks or Mcdonalds. Or meet at your bank, there is always plenty of cameras there and security guards, you can deposit your money right away when selling or withdraw at the bank.
