Hi all!
Once again I find myself in the market for a new SLR. I have owned the original Digital Rebel, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D and a Nikon D90. I currently have no lenses and very few accessories for either Canon or Nikon. I have been using and love my Canon S95. Now it is time to get back with an SLR.
I photograph mainly landscapes and dabble in some off-road photography (rock crawlers). My main reason for buying a camera is landscape. Most of the time my camera sits on top of a tripod during optimal conditions.
I have been looking into the Canon 50 and 60D, and Nikon's D7000. I cannot afford a high dollar lens for the Canon or Nikon except for the 17-40mm f/4L. I will be most likely purchase a Tokina 12-24 and call it good. What are your thoughts?

I would like to stay within a budget of 1400.00 USD.

Thank you in adavance,
Don

PS: Video is not all that important but a bonus.

That budget will kill the possibility of the D7000. If you go with the 50D you have a chance at better glass.

IMHO, I would do whatever I could to land the D7000 with decent glass but you will more than likely go over budget by $1K. It falls in the middle of those two as far as resolution is concern but has a better dynamic range than both. That's a big plus for landscapes.

I can always buy the body first and then glass later. I have learned not to rush into buying (the hard way). D7000 is a top contender for me at this moment.
Thank you!

Sounds like you need a used 5D and a 17-40. That should fit within that budget.

There's so many cameras out there right now you can get for that kind of money with good glass is really hard to just say one but my advise to you is to buy new with warranty, buy new technoly.

That being mentioned.... look at the 60D and the D7000 and slap a Tamron 17-50 (non-vc) on either one and go crazy!

Start with the forums here. Adorama and KEH offer used cameras although I havent checked to see where the market is for the 5D lately. I know you can find them for under $1000 pretty frequently in the forums here and on craigslist.

I'd suggest 5Dc + 17-40L + 50 1.8. Look in the sell section here in the forum or on fleebay.

I'm a long-time 5D Classic user!

Tou say landscapes with a tripod, and that's one of the types of shooting that made the 5DC "famous" for its great image qualities, including an amazing ability to "massage" a Raw file to make an image "all that it could be".

Shortcomings are of course older technology -- small LCD, no Live View, less resolution than the newer bodies, but guess what? When I'm shooting landscape/scenic photography the 5D remains my "go-to" body and I still love the images it delivers.

As far as the small LCD, well, I don't need a big one to nail the composition and exposure on a beautiful scene. A large viewfinder and some careful adjustments as you go take care of all that quite easily.

A used 5Dc is your only likely full frame offering in that budget.

Though I would try to stretch for a D7000, great camera.

All of the bodies you have owned are crop sensor cameras... They may all have different features, but the sensors are all the same size. Maybe you are a candidate for full frame, if you haven't found satisfaction yet?

I'd find satisfaction on full frame, but my budget and marital status might not.

I also vote for 5Dc and 17-40L. But even both use, they will cost more than $1400.

My 2nd choice will be Nikon d7000. I have no extensive experience with this body. I just use one belong to a friend, I like it quite a bit better than 60D

If you ended picking a Canon crop, I see no reason to go for 17-40L since there are shaper, faster glass for less money.
