I hope this will serve to help some people who are debating on purchasing a PLM for their speedlight. I am extremely satisfied, it seems to work quite well with the 51" model. Here's a few test shots I did with it. The 285 was at 1/2 power and stopped down to about f/5 for most of the pictures, so the light output is actually pretty good!!

Alienbees White 51" PLM w/ black backing and white diffuser.

All pics were shot with a Rebel T1i and kit lens. I'm pretty pumped to start using this thing!!

Here's how I mounted the flash (inb4 everyone laughs):

I've since flipped the umbrella bracket to mount the right way, but mounted the flash the same way with the shoe lace and stuff. If anyones got any questions, shoot away!!

cool ideas!
i know this is not a C&C thread but wish it was in a more interesting environment :)
the flash seems to not have enough power though. I like the PLM's softness. but the flash gun seems to be overwhelmed a bit. But what do I know :)
If you were further away from wall, then your subject would be lighter than the wall and seperate nicely from background.

mount is genius! :D

(Just cause I love the initial idea)

Imagine no #2 in an urban environment. In front of one of those tall glass buildings hopefully with a cool facade.

Thanks for the replies guys. This was unfortunately the best we could do last night, we looked around our dorm for a while before finding this spot. It's pretty hard to find an isolated are for photos. It's like the day after tomorrow outside too, so outdoors pictures aren't an option for a little bit haha.

sweet! I can't imagine using that PLM outdoors though... Even the slightest breeze and WHAM!
btw, how sturdy are those PLMs? Would they be ok if it were to fall over or are there a lot of wires and such that could be bent?

It feels really solid. The "bones" (is that the correct term?) inside the umbrella are plastic so I feel like they'd have some give before breaking or bending like the metal arms in an umbrella. I just ordered an Impact 9.5" heavy duty stand, so hopefully that should hold it sturdier!!

I've had it with winter, Eduardo. I'm coming to stay with you in sunny Spain. Got an extra bedroom?
