Service life of Canon G series ?

I bought my first Canon last month, a G12. Great, little camera, feels robust, does everything I ask of it.

I've always had SLR's, DSLR's, Rangefinder 35mm and Medium Formats before.

Pentax, Mamiya, Leica are my other brands.

The above equipment has been durable.

So far, touch wood, haven't had much in the way of difficulty in 40 odd years of photography. BTW, I'm not a pro, just an enthusiastic amateur, who nonetheless, particularly now that I'm retired, give my digital cameras a daily workout.

I'm assuming the Canon G series is a durable unit, Canon having an excellent reputation and the G series being their premium, small camera.

Wondering what other's experience is...lifetime expectations of the G series, from the first G ...up to the newest in the pack, the G12 ?

Any problems with them ?

No problem, it's working fine.
Don't worry about what could possibly happen, enjoy your G12.

I've had a G3 since 2002. Still works great. YMMV

My G3, G6, G9, G12 still work.

My first digital was a G2. Awesome camera. It gave me 5 years of flawless service before I sold it on Craigslist. Kinda wish I kept it!

My brother had a G1. It failed one day - dead circuit board - cost too much to repair so he scrapped it. It was 3 or 4 years old.

I replaced my G2 with a G9. I have to say I am dismally disappointed with it. After about 2 years, it self destructed when 2 screws fell out inside the camera, shorting out a circuit board. This is a known issue with the G7's and G9's. The 2 screws that hold the wriststrap bracket in place fall out and rattle around inside the camera until they short something out. Canon says lalalalalalalalalalala​la I don't hear you - it is not an issue - never heard of it. Shame on you Canon.

Replaced my dead G9 with a G11. Yeah, faithful Canon customer here! Canon Cameras, Canon printers and more.

So far the G11 is great. But I have only had it for about 4 or 5 months so cannot comment on the service life.

Really, I think much of it comes down to the individual units. There is good and bad in any product. One user could play football with his camera and have it last a dozen years while the next could baby the same model and have it perish prematurely. Like me and my G9.

If my G11 quits tomorrow, I'll buy a G12.

My G2 purchased in 2001 is still serving me well as an occasional use P&S despite having had some nasty knocks and falls.

My G7 had a pretty rough/busy life before I got it...and it worked perfectly until some jackass stole it...I got my G9 secondhand as well...so far so good!

My G9 is still going strong. I've carried it around with me every day for the past three years without problems. I've also gotten it pretty wet (not submerged, but splashed on) and it still works. The only thing wrong is that the latch that keeps the battery locked in broke, so now when I open the battery compartment the battery falls out. Not a big deal, I just turn the camera upside down when I replace the battery.

my G7 died after about year and a half of service

I've owned my G5 since 2003-2004ish and it still works flawlessly. Although it definitely needs a new battery In my experience, you can't go wrong with a G series in terms of reliability.
