I have the opportunity to spend a few bucks and upgrade my old 5D. I have a 7d that I use for sports and so forth. I'd like to take advantage of the improvements in the 5D mkII (larger LCD, better ISO performance, and self cleaning sensor to name a few). What I wondered about though is, should I spend the difference and go with the 1D Mk IV?

I have a studio and do a lot of portrait photography event photography. I'm trying to get out and do more landscape and nature photography, but probably won't be doing any of that for income.

My questions are probably impossible to answer, but I wonder: is the image quality of the MkIV worth the difference between the two cameras? Has the quality of the 5D II good enough to blur the line between the 1D and 5D?

I wanted to hear from a few 1D owners and get their input. Joel

Think of the 5DII as a Rebel with a full-frame sensor.

The 5D will give you what you need in the studio. The benefit of the MKIV would be the robustness of the camera and its longevity. You can get two 5d mk2s for the cost of the MkIV. I would get the 5D. The image quality diffrence will be tiny.

The 5D2 has great IQ, just as good if not better than the 1D4. If you don't need 10FPS, weather sealed body, or great af performance, the 5D2 will work just fine.

Any 1D users want to chime in?

I have both - and use both on a daily basis.

1DIV will do anything you want it to do..the IQ is outstanding.. and the high ISO is considered better than the 5D2 by some (Including me).

The 5D2 has amazing IQ as well, but it just slacks on focusing etc....I'm a photojournalist, and I'll run around with something like a 70-200 on my 1D and a 16-35 on the 5D2....if i were you, i'd go with the 1D Mark IV...

unless cleaning your sensor has become troublesome, all else you'll gain from the 5d2 is enlargeability and better noise. I have both. I've also had 1ds and 1ds2 and all you really gain there robustness. they're great for the studio, but suck to carry all day -- unless you need the weather sealing.

I don't know why anyone buys a crop sensor in a 1d body. they're rebels without the full frame sensor, just a pro styled heavy body. maybe sports guys that need speed. only the 1ds3 has better iq than the 5d2.

reading your sig, a 1d won't make you a better photographer. buy a waist level finder film camera.

The reason would be that the frame rate is higher, it's a 1.3 crop instead of the normal crop you see on a rebel etc...and that can be beneficial with longer glass...the 1D body itself is so much more durable than the body on the 5D 2...it's perfect for being out in the field all day...

Id argue the better noise part. Its been shown that in higher ISOs the mk IV is a better (i.e.- Cleaner) camera.

my comment was over the 5D. and from results I've seen, noise is a tie with the 1D non-s.

and of course the durability of the 1 series is without question. so is the weight. I carry almost all my glass when I'm on a shoot (street) and using a 1ds was too much. I wouldn't put portraits and nature in the "need durable weathersealing" category. nothing beats a full frame sensor and it's false math to think your lens will be a new 1.3x or 1.6x lens. you can crop the image from a ff body (esp. 5d2 or 1Ds2 or 3) and get the same results.

speed is, of course, faster in the 1d non-s bodies. like I said, great for sports.

is the image quality of the MkIV worth the difference
between the two cameras? Has the quality of the 5D II good enough to blur the line between the 1D and 5D? YES

1D4 is great, and I would shoot with that more than the 5D2 (assuming Canon fixes my low light low contrast AF issue).

I wish all 'a yall would quit whining about the 5D II AF - it's fine. I was co-shooting a dubstep show last night and there were maybe 2 pics out of 400+ that were OOF and it was the cameras fault - and that's with people moving every which way and whatnot. Also, I shot ISO 3200 and the images look great.

Nobody has really brought up any 5D2 AF issues in this thread until you posted. ???
