Hey all, I recently upgraded from an XSi to a 5D, but now I don't have a telephoto lens. I'm trying to keep it under $450 or so. What do you guys recommend? I've been looking at the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM. But there's also the Sigma and Tamron. You guys tell me! Thanks!

If you are serious about IQ, save up for 70-200 f/4.0L USM.

depends on what you plan to do with the lens. 200mm is short on FF.

OP> How telephoto do you want? 100mm? 200mm? 300mm? 1200mm? For your price range either a 70-300 or 70-200 f4 would be the best way to go. If you need longer, I would save for a 100-400 or Sigma 150-500/50-500 OS.

When it comes to zooms, pick two of these three.

Good IQ
Fast
Cheap

Get a tele prime. Just my $0.02.

Really depends on the use.

If you dont need 300mm the 70-200 f4L is a no brainer, but you will need a bit more dosh.

I have a friend who has spent the last 2 years shooting motorsport with the lense you mentioned and there is nothing wrong with his pics (he gets em published), probably the best option if you need 300mm and want to keep it cheap while getting good image quality. Ive considered getting one as a lightweight back up option.
