I am doing a wedding on the 26th of this month. It will be at a catholic church. I had to sign a form and it said In no event should the photographer be in the sanctuary. I never paid attention to any of these when I went to weddings at catholic churches, but Should I try to get a long distance lens? 70-200 2.8? Cause I was in the process of selling my tamron to get a canon 24-70 2.8. Thanks in advance

yeah, a 70-200 f/2.8 is one of the essential lenses in a wedding :)

Hopping onto the sanctuary is a no-no in most churches but you could shoot from the side if there was room there. In any event I would consider a 70-200/2.8 IS to be pretty useful for shooting in a church. That and the 24-70 should meet all your needs.

Enjoy

70-200 f/2.8L IS MKII. If you're going to be shooting stationary in the sanctuary and think you could get away with something like a 135L then do it

This is getting confusing. If you are a paid, primary photographer, it shouldn't matter. Besides, from that logic, no one would have their wedding photos at all if they decide to get married in a Catholic church. So, are you going to be a primary photographer or a second shooter or just shooting a wedding of your relatives and friends?

Wait, so how do you take pictures if you're forced outside the sanctuary?

OK ditch the Tamron and get the 70-200. It will offer you a wealth of possibilities. A 135L wouldn't be a bad idea either but that would depend on how close you can get.

If you're strapped for cash, the 70-200 and 50/1.8 should see you through the day. Remember that you can also find a lot of use for the 70-200 for outside shots and at the reception. You won't have much of a wide option but perhaps you may be able to rent or borrow one?

Best wishes

If the Church say no, I don't see how you can even sneak in with a camera at all. Obviously, your clients should understand that and can't expect you to produce shots on the ceremony inside the church.

I'm Catholic. The most churches often have a separate sanctuary area that's not part main church. The wedding ceremony takes place in the main church. You should go to the church and talk to the pastor for clarification.

In any event, you can't go wrong with the 70-200 IS II for weddings. If you getting paid, it's a must have.

sounds like you're going to need a normal zoom and a long zoom. I would buy one and rent the other. The Tamron won't do well in low light. Also consider a wide angle. Catholic churches are great for fisheye and wide angle lenses. If you're limited in equipment, I wouldn't even consider a prime, especially a 135l! you need either a couple of zooms, or a few primes, either will work very well, but both are very expensive!

I've been to tons of Catholic weddings and there was always an official photog. Usually no flash allowed.

I will rent the 70-200 2.8 IS. and buy the 24-70. Seems like 28 is wide on full frame so I can imagine what 24 is. Thanks in advance everyone. Btw what are some good/cheap rental sites?
