I've been to tons of Catholic weddings and there was always an official photog. Usually no flash allowed.

9 out of 10 catholic church that says no flash will allow a flash with a donation ;-)a

How dark is the church? Is f/2.8 fast enough? Might want to consider an 85 f/1.8 or 135 f/2 instead.

Will you be using 2 bodies?

I will rent the 70-200 2.8 IS. and buy the 24-70. Seems like 28 is wide on full frame so I can imagine what 24 is. Thanks in advance everyone. Btw what are some good/cheap rental sites?

Now that's sounds like a plan.

Don't know any rental sites in the US as I'm in London but I believe Adorama does rent gear

Why don't you PM Helen Ostler who is a member here.

Having shot in a church at night before I can testify that 2.8 on a 5D2 will be fine. You're not exactly producing enormously large prints anyway, are you? As Tim asked above, I had assumed you were using two bodies. If not, certainly consider it since you wouldn't want to be left high and dry if the 5D2 developed a fault.

Back to lenses, my view again is that the 70-200 and 24-70 will be your two best lenses for the day.

Good luck with the wedding

Thanks for all the info. I'll pick up a 2nd body before that date also They picked my package that comes with all the pictures on cd, so I don't have to worry about printing out any pictures.

Another reason (besides child abuse) to go protestant.

FWIW, the wedding photog I talked to LOVES her 70-200mm f/2.8L and 85L. If you're the primary photographer, do yourself a favor and pickup a rebel xt or something as a backup; if your 5D II goes down, you're screwed. Plus you can mount a fast prime on one and the telephoto on the other.

So, are you going to be a primary photographer or a second shooter or just shooting a wedding of your relatives and friends?

Sanctuary doesn't mean the whole church. I believe the sanctuary or sacred part of the church the OP is talking about is the front/stage part of the church.

I have been involved in three catholic weddings as photographer/videographer/groomsman, and no one was allowed up there besides the priest.

I have a wedding booked for July, and the pastor has told the bride that photographers and videographers must shoot from the back of the church only. So it looks like I will be investing in a 85mm 1.8 or a 100mm 2.8.

I only have enough money for one :( if I buy the 70-200 2.8 IS I won't have a mid range :( lol yeah I know it sucks :(

dilemma? no.

rent whatever you don't end up buying. you are being paid and they expect paid work.
