So here's the deal...

$50 one time membership fee
$30/month with a 12 month commitment
Commissions paid to the gallery are 25% for Art Council members (another $35)
45% for non Art Council members
Requirement to serve on the standing "Hanging and Food" committees at least 2x year.

This gets you a 2 month showing every year.. you have a room where you can display a lot of photos with prices..

So, I'm into just the fees for about $445/year... to break even, I'd have to sell about $575 for those 2 months..

Think I'll pass.... Anyone know if other galleries have such requirements?

Which gallery is that?

I'm not a fan of consignment, pay me now or forget about it.

If you were "invited" to join and pay all of that money, it sounds like junk mail. I search for what I want. Most outside "invitations," requests, and offers are unceremoniously ripped and tossed.

Fairly standard for Co-Op style galleries.

...and/or for community arts centers (membership fees).

I've sold pieces in environments like this. No way to get rich. I do so to support the local arts.

Fees here sound excessive. Instead consider joining a few community art centers and hanging there. They charge an annual fee and commission (old sold pieces - usually ~ 30%), but at least in my experience, do not charge all those other excessive, ongoing fees. Oh, and they ask you to volunteer your time, but do not mandate it.

After all the math is computed, you may make a little more profit with the CAC than with the above situation.

One of the artists that has seen my work invited me.. I wish there were more opportunities here, but it's a relatively small town..

Right now, my goal is to get my photographs out for as many people as possible to see them. Sales would be nice, and I HAVE sold several pictures in the past, but - not my primary goal at this time... "I" don't think I'm that good yet, but if others do, then I certaily wouldn't pass it up...

I'm in a small town of about 42K .. appears to be the only gallery in our area that offers an opportunity for 'untested' artists to display their work..

I think I've reconsidered.... After all, where else can you 'rent' public space at an art gallery for under $10/day ?? I'll have my pictures on display for 2 months, and I can help the rest of the artists the rest of the year.... Perhaps, someone will remember my name if they're looking for a photograph, and want to support local artists...

Appreciate the input !!!

There are several high end galleries that target a high end audience and though I have not participated I know one guy that did and has done quite well by it. He paid some 800.00 up front and then the ongoing costs were around 450.00 per year. He could be giving a bunch of BS but knowing him I doubt it. He said he was ahead of the curve into month 3.

They are out there but you need to review their marketing strategies carefully. There will be those that are doing this to simply scam the participants. Enter with caution is what I say.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.
