both parties could also paypal each other the value of the items to be traded.

That is an interesting spin on this, but imagine two folks trying to trade who both choke on that 3% trying to figure out who would eat the PayPal fees...:D

I traded my 5D Mark II for a 1D Mark III with a gentleman in Louisiana...me living in Wisconsin. I made it an effort to call an talk with him personally to get feel for him. After a couple minutes of talking with someone, you kind of get an idea of who the other is and if you can trust that a trade will be succesful! My deal worked out great and it only took a 5 minute conversation to make it that way!!

When you issue a refund (assuming the trade goes well) PayPal will refund all the fees as well.

You just have to play it with caution and feel the deal out. If you dont trust them or they dont trust you it is best to forget it and wait for a deal you feel better about. There are plenty of them posted every day. I rarely leave or expect feedback here because all they accept is positive feedback and the couple deals that werent very honest I recieved here were just my tough luck. I dont think a policy of nothing but glowing happy reviews is really very helpful. What if Joe BLow has 10 thrilled buyer and 3 were not any where near as described and he just blew them off? Well as far as the rest of the members are concerned this guy has 10 great feedback so naturally you should expect to ship first to him, right? I know the risks of negatives being given unjustly, but there should be some kind of balance here. IMHO. <--THAT MEANS IN MY HUMBLE OPINION SO DONT ATTACK ME LIKE USUAL

you just issue a refund when you receive the item.

Ship at the same time. If you basically say you don't trust me to the same extent you expect me to trust you I won't do business with you.

The exception is when someone is brand new with no history. They send item/payment first.

Exactly. My trade was with someone's brother. The first guy had around 100 post but his brother wasn't even a member... Got lucky I guess.
