Here are the 2 photos side by side in my photostream:

The first one, IMG_3172, is the one I processed in October. It's 2,204 KB in size. The second one, IMG_3172a, I just processed. It's 6,817 KB in size. The settings were the same for both so far as I know, i.e. image quality 1, etc.

And this proves what I have been saying. One image has noise reduction, the other does not.

All that noise is going to greatly increase file size. Go apply noise reduction in DPP if you want smaller files.

I think you nailed it Sdiver2489. I don't recall applying any noise reduction originally but I must have done so. Normally I don't mess with noise reduction much because it tends to blur text and can make text illegible. I just set both types of noise reduction to the half way point of ten and now the .jpg is 2,388 KB in size. Thanks a bunch Sdiver2489. bw!

Well there ya go! A good lesson to learn, at least to be aware of! Not that it's always good to use noise reduction but at least you know what the diff can be!

Frankly I'm stunned by the effect it has on file size. I would never have suspected the dramatic difference it makes.

No Problem, DPP has really bad NR so I don't blame you for avoiding it. Personally...if possible try investing in LR3. It has amazing and quick NR. Glad to hear you got it worked out.
