I like fast primes, and I am thinking of the 50f1.4, but worried a bit about the frequency of AF motor failure. The latest lens rental survey doesn't include this model, but the older surveys of lens failure had 20% failure rates. Is this just because they have many new lenses that haven't reached the 1 year doomsday, or is there some change in the newer lenses?
I could really use an f1.4 model for my T2i, and the Canon is priced right.

Does anyone have any feedback on the lens that might help answer this question?

This feedback is encouraging. I wonder what proportion of users really have problems with the lens....

AFAIK the 50/1.4's achilles heel is not its motor, but the AF gear train.

It's a use related failure so all new / lightly used examples probably won't have problems. IIRC, lensrental.com wrote a report on their lens failure trends and noted they started seeing failures with the 50 f/1.4 USM after one year of use therefore I would not consider any of the above information "encouraging." That said, my friend has one she uses infrequently that works fine and is several years old. If it's not going to be your primary lens, chances are it will work fine for quite a while.

My copy went out after about 3 years of relatively light use--It will focus at either extreme but does nothing in the middle of the focal range.

I sold mine last year but I used it for about 3 years with no problems.

My own pet theory is that the gear system is vulnerable to damage if the front portion that extends gets bumped around. I don't have any tangible evidence of this, but it seems reasonable enough. The factory hood attaches to the main body and protects this area from impact and the lens is compact enough that I simply left the hood attached all the time. When I was taking pictures of the lens for my sale ad was teh first time I removed the hood since it was purchased.

Thanks for the link. It looks like almost 24% problems. Not very encouraging at all.
I wonder if the AF is really full time manual override. It is a gear system, after all. On other Canon geared lenses (not ring USM), you need to turn AF off and go to manual to use manual focusing. I am guessing that this is a phony full time manual system, and that contributes to the problem.

This is not something I would worry about, if you want it get it. Before you buy a car you don't ask what are the chances of getting into an accident :).

Actually, I bought a Honda Accord instead of a Toyota Camry after reading all of the reports of unintended acceleration in the Camry. I may get the lens, but I am still worried about the AF.
