I currently have extended warranty on my 50mm 1.8 because it's built like toy but if I get the 1.4, I will also buy warranty.

I bought mine like 3 month ago, no problem at all

Did it been out of the box yet? :D

You might need to wait a little longer before you notice any problems. ;)

Mike - How do you like the Sigma 30? Did it require microadjust, or was it spot on out of the box.
You are one of the very few people who has had the Sigma 30, Canon 35f2, Canon 35f1.4 and Canon 28f1.8. How do they all compare?

My Sigma 30mm 1.4 seems to like about +5 MA but I really haven't used it much to be sure and MA can be a little frustrating to get right. (funny how my 40D always seemed fine without it) The 30 1.4 seems to be just about as sharp as the 35L I used to have. I sold the 35L because I hardly used it and it seemed crazy to tie up so much money in a lens I hardly use.

The 35 f2 and 28 f1.8 are both nice lenses but both need to be stopped down a little. The 35L and Sigma 30mm 1.4 both seem a little sharper wide open, or at least sharper than the other two at f1.8 or f2. After trying all those lenses I decided the Sigma 30mm 1.4 is the best all-around compromise between sharpness, price, and usability.

Thanks for the feedback. My 35f2 seems good at f2 and very sharp at f2.2. I am interested in a faster lens with an f1.4 aperture. My cameras don't have microadjust, and that was why I have been interested in the 50f1.4.
If I decide to go for it, it will be with insurance.

If people would stop buying this lens with its high failure rate, Canon would fix the issue. When they sell like hot cakes every year and enough of them work fine for years, they get by with no funds spent on R&D and they are happy with millions in profits.
I have one but I bought it for 200.00 used which leaves me enough to fix it once.

After 4.5 years, still my go-to walk-around prime on FF and 1.3 crop. I leave the hood on, but when reversed for the bag, I always ensure the lens is parked at infinity.

Actually, I bought a Honda Accord instead of a Toyota Camry after reading all of the reports of unintended acceleration in the Camry. I may get the lens, but I am still worried about the AF.

Not worried about the Camry I think they have an Audi like issue on their hands. In the past Honda has had transmission problems.

We each have different worry points, and you have to do what you are comfortable with.

I have had total transmission failure with a Ford Windstar at 80,000 miles. After asking other owners, I discovered that all of them had a tranny failure with their Ford Windstars. No more Fords for me.
I was happy with my prior Camry. Worries about AF are not quite like worries with cars.
My lens might fail, but it won't do it at 125 miles per hour. The price of failure is not quite the same.

Exactly, which is why worrying about potential a failure in a lens imo is kind of pointless. This is a risk we talk with everything. If you like the lens I would be asking about the kind of quality the lens has vs if there is a potential for failure.
