Haha that's what I said when I joined the forums.....since then I have invested more in gear in 2 months than I have my whole month! BLAST the photo archive threads :(

Haha, when I joined I only had my 20D and my tamron 28-300 which I was not happy with the quality. Since then I have had the 10-22, 50 1.8, 17-40L, 24-105L, 5Dc, bought a bigger bag, and rented the 24-70L, 100mm macro, and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. My bank account hates you all, lol :D

What do you guys think about going Leica? I reckon I can sell my current gear for around 3000 USD, maybe a bit more. An m8 goes for around 2000, damn I want a rangefinder.

I have the battery grip fitted to the 5D and its way heavier than the 50D and grip so I'm think I may be better off with the IS lens

Then why not take the battery grip off? I have one for use when I need it, but it stays off most of the time as it makes the camera so damned bulky and heavy.

But I think you have the point on IS the wrong way around. With a heavy camera, properly held, it's EASIER to keep it steady than with a lighter one.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

Leica uses some great glass, but the appeal of the rangefinder is lost on me.

Leica was great back in pre-digital days - very expensive and debatably not worth the extra over fine cameras like the Nikon F and OM2, but it was a way of flaunting your available wealth. Nowadays they're still mega expensive but lag seriously in performance.

I am going to express what might be an unpopular opinion: What's with the battery grips?

I mean, I totally get it if you actually need the power, but if you don't? I read that people like the "weight" or the "feel"? Maybe it's cuz I'm a girl, but I don't need any extra weight on my camera, ha! With my 24 or 135 on, my 5D (grip-less) is heavy heavy, and I'm good to go.

Plus, sometimes I wrap it in a Domke and stick it in my purse. A battery grip would completely kill my ability to be mobile and stealthy :)

The main deal is the second shutter release button. It allows you to shoot verticals with changing your hand position. Its a minor deal, but it makes a difference to some people. Those of us who came from a film background and were used to using a motordrive with a second shutter button it makes a camera feel more familiar. But for a lot of people its simply about handling and perhaps for some about the minor snob appeal of having a camera thats more decked out than the next guy.

It comes down to a personal preference. For me it's having the extra button for vertical photos. I shot about 900 pictures at my wife's triathlon and it made a huge difference. It's -way- more comfortable than trying to wrap your hand around the top of the camera. In fact I usually only have 1 battery in it to keep the weight down.

Ahh. I was not aware that there was a second shutter button! I suppose I can see that being pretty nifty.

I think for me, though, size and weight will keep me grip-less for quite a while...

They are truly an accessory, as they dont really provide any function you simply have to have. I use a grip on my 5D, but not on my 40D. I took the 40D to a baseball game yesterday and Kept trying to find the missing shutter button all day.

I like 5Dc with 50 1.8 II, very light and fits into to my computer over-shoulder bag.
I take it with me at work to take pictures before and after work.

I like grip ergonomics for taking of portraits.
And have it for outdoors photography during winter, it holds charge all day.

Haha, nice. Isn't it funny how much button-pushing and knob-turning on the camera becomes muscle-memory? Like, when I'm looking directly at the back of my cam and trying to explain to a friend how to change a setting or something, sometimes it takes me a minute to remember! It's like the knowledge goes away a little when my camera isn't up to my face.

At first I thought it was a must with a grip. If it was for like two weeks ago or something that I went on this thread and debated having grips. Tried removing them and I havent had the need for them during that time. I really love the lightweight camera, especially since carrying both cameras suddenly became less of an hassle. But yeah, it is nice to grip the camera just for the WOW factor sometimes, like when shooting at a new client for the first time.
