Haha, nice. Isn't it funny how much button-pushing and knob-turning on the camera becomes muscle-memory? Like, when I'm looking directly at the back of my cam and trying to explain to a friend how to change a setting or something, sometimes it takes me a minute to remember! It's like the knowledge goes away a little when my camera isn't up to my face.

The 40D and 5D are similar enough that I dont have any problems remembering functions, but I dont use the 40D that much anymore so I constantly found myself looking at buttons I would otherwise instinctively push without thinking.

I like grip ergonomics for taking of portraits.
And have it for outdoors photography during winter, it holds charge all day.

Another good point.

Funnily enough I tend to use the standard shutter button, EVEN when taking portrait-mode pictures AND with the grip fitted. Back in my FSLR days (I still have one but I don't use it) I sometimes used a motor winder, but that didn't have an extra shutter button. I have no problem holding and using an ungripped camera in portrait mode. I got my battery grip purely for an upcoming event, when changing camera batteries will be yet one more distraction I can do without.

I agree about the bulk being a nuisance for carrying. I often carry my camera with walk-around lens in a standard small backpack, protected inside a neoprene laptop bag. Without the grip it fits just fine, with the grip it won't fit at all.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

I've yet to try shooting with a grip... it's not really on my to-do list either, I'm happy with my camera the way it is.

Yup -- I'm in your camp.

Did you shoot any cherry blossoms? I thought about trying to get something interesting for this (external link), but I just didn't have the time to really put the effort in, ha.

.....many say that.....until they slide that grip in and shoot their first vertically oriented photo. :D

I have to admit I get a warm glow when I see my 5D in full Darth Vader mode with the grip, and the 135L attached with the hood on.

I took my 50 1.4 out there to play around, took a few shots, nothing to write home about (I got a few portraits with it of my wife/daughter, but I've gotten paranoid of posting stuff in public lately )

I tried to go the following weekend (last weekend), but there was too much traffic to get into DC, so we hung out around Old Town Alexandria instead

They do that contest every year, right? It has a $10 or $20 entry fee? (or am I thinking of a different one... I don't see an entry fee on your link)

I've shot with a camera with a grip before (not mine), and... meh, for my style of shooting, I don't really need it.

I guess I should've rephrased my previous post -- I've yet to try shooting with a grip on the 5D. The cam I tried was a Nikon with a built-in grip, I don't remember the model, it's like the Canon 1 series (original 1 series, not 1DIII/IV whatever the new models are).

I don't think I'll ever go back to NOT shooting with a grip, but that's just me. The extra shutter button is really nice to have, and since I only have one lens it really helps to offset the weight of my 24-105 when the camera is hanging around my neck.

I think everybody owes it to themself to at least TRY it once. It's just like the back-button focus, if you don't like it you can always go back to the "old" way of doing things.

I'm not sure about en entry fee -- I've never done the contest before. I think this particular contest is a tricky one -- SO many photos can look SO similar that you really have to get lucky and get something really unique to stand out. I mean, after all, it's basically a flower-picture-taking contest ;)

But hey-o on Old Town! I live and work here -- love it.

That I've tried, since it had no effort on my part  I didn't like it either...

Very true...

Old town has many hidden gems, we go there every once in a while... we live in the Fairfax area.

So, hows the 24-105? Thinking of grabbing a used one ($800) and selling my 70-200 f4 non IS...

The 70-200 just doesn't have a place on FF for me, too long for street or indoors and too short for what I need a zoom for. If I ever go long zoom again I'm gonna need a 300...
