This was with ISO1600 F1.4. I think I did a little bit of noise reduction in LR but without NR it looks just fine. ISO3200 is fine if you don't underexpose too much. I tend to overexpose by about 1-2 stops and pull it back in post. Seems to work pretty well for me.

What would you say was the "usable" ISO on the 5d classic?

Honestly all the way up to 3200, you'll have plenty people posting to prove that. Given beyond the native 1600 it will be noisy, but still better then many newer crop body cameras for sure.

How do you get it above 1600?

Is that the "H" setting in the ISO reading?

I use my 5D routinely at ISO 800, without a second thought at ISO 1600, and at ISO 3200 without qualms when the occasion warrants. So long as I get the exposure right I have few noise problems - but with incorrect exposure I can have unacceptable noise at ISO 400 or even lower. In fact, I often wish it offered ISO 6400.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

I had some problem with noise the other day, but then realised today I was shooting with a polarizing filter (which I had left on), which was throwing my exposures...

But that made me question what the usable ISO was so that I had a baseline to compare it with.
