Hey all,

I'm having a weird issue where my 5D is consistently underexposing entire shots by a full stop or more, but it doesn't happen all the time. It has happened with all my lenses and I can't pinpoint a certain condition that makes it happen. Just two weeks ago at my sisters graduation I was in Av with spot metering and the entire histogram was pushed to the left with no highlights or anything that would mess up the metering. I had to add a +1 stop compensation which helped the histogram but I was still short on the highlighs, but I didn't worry to much because I shot raw.

Anyone else have the same issues? I can post examples later tonight if you guys/gals want to see them.

Umm, these shots don't need the technical perfection, lovely capture. I wish I had this hobby when my babies were born, not enough of these moments were captured, congrats!!!

pridash wrote in post #12524487 (external link)
Yh sometimes we strive for "technical" perfection...when in reality, it's not always important. What is important is that you've captured a "moment" that is special to you. :)

Congrats to you...and well done with the image. :)

Thanks for the kind words! My comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek - I know that most in this thread don't lose sight of what's important vs what's technically better. When I was taking this, I remember paying attention to the framing and relative positions of my wife's face/head and the baby. It wasn't until after I looked at them at home that I realized that I was that close to not cutting off an appendage - oh well, no biggie, considering. :)

Very nice capture. Did you use your 28-70L for this?

No, nifty fifty, actually. I haven't updated the gear list in a while.

Haven't seen that before.

Just to confirm, you're spot metering, locking the exposure, then recomposing?

Have you accidentally set some negative exposure compensation?

I bet that's what he did if he's shooting in AV.

Just purchased a 17-40L... can't wait to see ultra wide on full frame.

Congratulations! I'm saving for it too.

Correct. I use back button focus so it's no problem

Nope, I usually leave the the wheel off

I started at +0 and when I noticed the issue I pushed it to +1. I could have just gone manual but the lighting was changing and I not the most comfortable in M yet. Being a graduation I only had one chance for some of the photos so I stayed in Av

Scub,

Does it only happen when your shutter speed is really high, say 1/4000 or higher?

Humour me, turn the camera on in Av mode and and look through the viewfinder. What does your meter read?

Use M mode, meter using spot meter on an object. Make sure the needle is set to the center and take a pic.
Switch to AV, spot meter on the same object. Do you get the same reading? If the meter in your viewfinder underexposed by 1?

I think Geno and I are on the same page...
