Scub,

Does it only happen when your shutter speed is really high, say 1/4000 or higher?

nope

Humour me, turn the camera on in Av mode and and look through the viewfinder. What does your meter read?

It's centered in the middle at +0

Use M mode, meter using spot meter on an object. Make sure the needle is set to the center and take a pic.
Switch to AV, spot meter on the same object. Do you get the same reading? If the meter in your viewfinder underexposed by 1?

I think Geno and I are on the same page...

5D+24-105L in M at ISO100 it metered at f/4 1/1000
5D+24-105L in Av at ISO100 set to f/4 it metered at 1/1000

Here are a couple of examples of what i'm seeing and talking about.

two weeks ago at my sisters graduation I was in Av with spot metering and the entire histogram was pushed to the left with no highlights or anything that would mess up the metering

I've often had unpredictable metering when I've used spot metering and then recomposed. My remedy is not to use spot metering in those circumstances.

Hey all,

I'm having a weird issue where my 5D is consistently underexposing entire shots by a full stop or more, but it doesn't happen all the time. It has happened with all my lenses and I can't pinpoint a certain condition that makes it happen. Just two weeks ago at my sisters graduation I was in Av with spot metering and the entire histogram was pushed to the left with no highlights or anything that would mess up the metering. I had to add a +1 stop compensation which helped the histogram but I was still short on the highlighs, but I didn't worry to much because I shot raw.

Anyone else have the same issues? I can post examples later tonight if you guys/gals want to see them.

Oddly enough, I noticed this very problem today while shooting. I have only had this camera for a few days and am learning it still (moving from the 7D) but thought it odd that the histogram was pushed left. As someone after you suggested it was the spot metering (which I use a lot) I took a few shots just now to test. Shots with spot metering (no recomposing) were underexposed while shots with evaluative metering came out fine.

Hmm....I was just thinking I was doing something incorrectly but now I wonder! Same setup as your examples, AV mode with spot metering, meter reads +0 but histogram does not support that.

Sorry this is late, but thank you all for the condolences regarding my grandma. It really means a lot and is really appreciated!

Here are a couple photos from the past few weeks. The sun is finally showing up more and more each week, it's a miracle :D

Good to know I'm not the only one with this issue. Hopefully we can figure out what the issue is, which may very well be user error.

Just to confirm, you're spot metering, locking the exposure, then recomposing?

scubthebub wrote in post #12530872 (external link)
Correct. I use back button focus so it's no problem.

Wait - if you're using the custom function for the back focus button, that will no longer lock exposure, will it?

there are different settings for AF and AE lock. I have it set so the shutter release button is AE lock and the back button is AF. So I can use the spot meter and set my AE lock, then recompose and focus independently with the back button for that shot.
