Shot a quick session with a Model Mayhem girld the other day. Nothing spectacular but oh well, haven't contributed in a while. Way out of my element here....C&C Welcome, never shot studio before.

Rest of the set is viewable here!

I just got my 5Dc and was wondering if any of you shoot JPEG with it? The RAW images are amazing but for some reason I'm not liking my jpegs. I'll admit, Im a noob with this camera and maybe I need to tweak settings.

One thing you can "play" with -- the Canon Raw processing software Digital Photo Professional (DPP) is a nice bit of software to produce quick conversions, and also it can give you a good "feel" of your in-camera settings. This is because it "knows" about all your camera settings that can be used to produce jpegs, like Picture Styles, White Balance, etc.

So, if you shoot a Raw shot and bring it into DPP, you can set different Picture Styles and "play" with the settings for Contrast, Saturation, White Balance, Sharpening, etc, and you can get a feel of how an out-of-camera jpeg could come out if you applied the same settings in the camera.

You could also set up your camera settings and then if you load the Raw file into DPP it would "read" those settings and apply them to the preview of the Raw file.

Or, of course, you can shoot jpegs with different settings.

I myself only shoot Raw files, and use Lightroom for my "serious" processing -- I prefer the flexibility of Raw and the tools of Lightroom. But, since you asked, those are my thoughts:)!

Thanks a lot! We definately tried to squeeze as much diversity out of black and grey as possible.

I always shoot RAW no matter what simply because of the flexibility you get in PP. it's much easier to fix errors in your photos than shooting jpeg.

Wow, thanks!! I'm not so sure, myself. Regardless, I'm still so far from what I've envisioned, but such is the curse of the landscape/cityscape photographer, I suppose. Wonderful shot yourself, sir!

Bryan

Thanks Bryan! I guess it's really the sky that does it for me in that shot. You missed a piece of sensor dust in the sky though. :)

Andrew, nice shot, but a question and suggestion!

Did you shoot Raw?

I ask, because Raw files have a lot of latitude in adjusting colors, and if that were my shot I'd want to work on the blue channel to enhance the blue sky. You can certainly do some with a jpeg, it's just that Raw makes it so smooth!

I know what you are feeling re jpeg. I went quickly to RAW, but after reading folks like Will Crockett I took another look at JPEG (I still shoot mostly in RAW). His contention is that if you shoot the image right to start with, you won't waste time tinkering. True enough, I guess, but Will is a huge fan of using a seperate exposure meter, and watching a host of variables when you shoot a scene. I am too lazy or too careless so I fall back on RAW. I do not process hundreds of images so I need not worry about a "workflow" as such. I may try to get more attentive at shutter time for the new year@!

Glad you got the 5D...Joe

I can't speak for others, but in my case, every photo requires tinkering - and it's not because of a failure on my(or anyone elses, for that matter) part, but rather it just gives me the tools to do a large amount of PP on the images, not because they're technically rubbish, but rather to achieve whatever look I was going for which is often quite literally impossible to achieve in-camera.
Also, NR.

A good photographer can take extraordinary photos anywhere, with any camera and any lens while a mediocre one will take mediocre ones everywhere, with every camera and every lens.
Never limit yourself with what others think you should do. Shoot what you find interesting, exactly the way you want to.

So a few weeks ago my 5D just magically stopped working, card read error and then no power period. Tried 3 batteries. nothing.

Sent it to canon, they charged me a $230 (includ shipping) default fee to be seen out of warranty, and 5 days later they sent back my camera all perfect again!! (and a new battery door because I lost mine).

THANK YOU CANON!! Bad circuit board apparently, one wonders how the heck that goes bad my camera is never near moisture and is babied. I missed it so much!!!

I shoot RAW only. Once I have it in LR3, and it uploads to my Flickr account does the file change from RAW to JPEG.

I'll try and get some blues in there, it was a overcast day. If you fancy, go ahead and edit it.

EDIT: I messed with it a little more in LR3.

Question guys. I'm planning on trading my 60d for a 5dc. I shoot portrait and still life. Is it worth it for me? I'm just worried about having the older user interface and no live view..

Well, you'll love the IQ. The older interface (inferior, smaller screen, fewer menu options, no live view) and the reduced pixels (so can't crop as deeply) aren't very lovable--but once you see the final pictures you probably won't mind much.
