Depends on what you do currently on your 40D. You'll lose out on live view, the "modern" user interface and so and maybe a couple of things. Your focal lenght on your lens will actually be true to what they are though ie 50mm=50mm vs 1.6x crop 50mm equals 84mm or so.

I did the switch from a 60D last week to a 5D and I love it. Might vary though to you because I don't/rarely used LV, the fast FPS and video anymore.

I do not use live view and mostly shoot landscape stuff and some birds. I know I will loose the extra length in my lenses, but I can always get and tele converter for it. The fps does not really matter to me as I rarely use it.

Thinking about buying a used 5D to upgrade from my 40D. Not sure. Will I really never look back once I go full frame? I have been whanting to for a while and have loved the 5D since I purchased my first DSLR, Digital Rebel. I wanted to get one when I bought my 40D in '07 but did not have the extra money at the time. Ahh so tempting.
Kevin

When I decided to upgrade from a 350XT I was looking at either the 5D or 60D, either one was within my budget. I finally choose the 5D and have been very happy with it and the quality of the photos. My main reason for considering the 60D was for live view and the main negative was the file size of the 60D, it is so much bigger that it would also mean replacing my computer. Funny, a short time after getting the 5D I had a computer melt down and it was replaced anyhow.
Also, keep in mind, you can buy a 5Dc and if you don't like it you should be able to re-sell it for what you paid for it, verses a new 60D. I will be keeping my 5Dc for another year or two, before looking for the 5D2 to replace it.

Concerning my computer meltdown, sure glad I keep backups on external drives (two USB drives).

Well if that's the case go for it! Just make sure you're getting a good one (had the mirror recall fix done and have them show proof if possible). Also try your best to get the "newest" models with the serial numbers starting either with a 2 or a 3. They tend to have a better LCD compared to the first batches that came out.

One of the first photos I made with this thing... while not a particularly good shot, I still found it amusing enough to do PP on and then upload on teh interwebz.

And I was surprised by the fact that it literally needed no NR at ISO800.

I went from a 400D to a 5D and I couldn't be happier... though I did already have lenses that were designed for FF and also perform to their fullest on it.

A good photographer can take extraordinary photos anywhere, with any camera and any lens while a mediocre one will take mediocre ones everywhere, with every camera and every lens.

OK thanks. Does the recall go into the newer serial #'s? I remember reading about this a long time ago but forgot about it.

It affects all 5ds I believe overrall. Canon does it for free since its a recall so thereabouts harm insending it in. I have a 07 model and it has the mirror fix done. If you're going to buy, try here first in the classifieds.

Monetarily speaking, perhaps. I think your combo is worth more on the used market but I might be wrong.

You can typically get 5D + grip for about $1000 and the 17-40 used for what...$650 or so?

I think 7D + grip goes for around $1300 used, but unsure on that 10-22.

TBH, I think I got one of the 7D lemons. Super noisy, and ugly noise (totally linear) at that. My XTi had more natural looking noise... It was just letdown, after letdown with that thing. Definitely looking forward to this upgrade... the 10-22 also had a small knick in the front element, so that'll bring the price on my end down. (Only noticeable in IQ, when the sun was in the frame)

No it does NOT. Only certain serial numbers are affected - it was a problem with the adhesive on a batch. Mine has not had the mirror fix done as it does not need it.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.
