Back button focusing is changing you camera to focus using your af-on button or * button and the shutter button is strictly for metering or other purpose... like AF stop IS start AE lock etc.....

here is why I do it..... What I focus on and meter on are different things I use only the center Focus point.... focus on my subject then recompose and take the picture. It helps me so I dont miss focus etc
