I might steal that ^ But try and make the number of the day rather than a heart.

Not really doing a 365 project, but trying to process at least one photo each day. Hey, it's a start :) Here's one from this past weekend...

Has anyone here tried any long exposures at night? I mean like 1min+.

I get some considerable noise and red and blue pixels at even 2 minutes. And this is outside in 0 degree Celsius weather.

I'd say some "hot" pixels is pretty common with long exposures, and the longer you go the more you get. I can get a couple spots with a 30 second exposure.

'Course each sensor will be somewhat different.

I know that some photogs such as some astrophotogs put their gear into a chilled box. I don't know the particulars, but it evidently helps.

You'll get hot pixels on pretty much everything, it's just the way sensors work...people do try to cool their cameras, etc...but I find that LENR works really well, or a bit of PP will clean it up easily, usually. I once forgot to turn LENR on and got mad hot pixels (I think my 30D), and since it was just star trails I just turned down the red in PS (most stars were blue/white anyways) and it made the hot pixels disappear.

Thanks Lowrider and Tony.

I had been reading this book on night photography and I got a little disappointed with the results I got. I did end up post processing them out. I might try the LENR next time since it's only like 2 minutes.

Long exposure noise reduction actually doubles the time of your exposure!!

No problem, I hope it's something you'll find useful! I love LENR, it really makes a big difference. The one time I had it turned off, I was shocked by how much "garbage" there was in the frame. (But that was a 10-ish minute exposure)

Well, not quite. I know what you mean, but just so we don't confuse MP or anyone else, I'm going to be a nerd and correct you haha. It doubles the time your camera is busy for, not the time of your exposure.

When you use LENR, you take a shot for X amount of time, and when the shutter closes, the camera activates the sensor and takes another "blank" shot for the identical amount of time. It maps the hot pixels in the "blank" shot and subtracts them from your original shot. So, your exposure (the amount of time your shutter is open for) remains the same, but your camera is busy for twice as long. This means that if you're planning on doing anything long (say 30 to 90 minute star trails), you have to make sure your camera is fully charged and you have to be okay with the fact that in one night you might just get ONE shot haha.

But, if you have tons of time and your subject is not going anywhere, and you don't mind sitting around waiting for your camera to take that second shot and process it, LENR is an excellent tool.

Yeah I know. I meant that my original shots were only about 2 minutes at most.

As opposed to taking a 30 min exposure. Don't have that kind of time hehe.

You'd be surprised at how amazingly peaceful it is (providing you're not out in the middle of nowhere in the west coast, wondering if the rustling you heard in the bushes next to you was a squirrel, a black bear or a cougar about to pounce on you haha)
