Can't See Imports

Hi there, help please!!

When I import my photo's from the camera, I import them onto my 2TB external hard drive. When I import the RAW photo's I cant view them, even when I transfer them onto my computer.

Do I need to have a program installed so I can view them without having to transfer them into a photo editing program such as photoshop or lightroom or even Canon Zoom Browser.

Ok, so I have downloaded the raw+codec program and I opened my file with the RAW photos in it and BINGO it automatically converted them to JPEG. I hope that the program was meant to do that...

Anyway, the program which I thing is CR2/AR2 or something like that (I am not on my home computer at the moment) tells me I have 15 days of the program. Does this sound right, after that I will need to pay???? Not that I mind, just clarification please?
