It's kinda fun where TV and the internet can take us sometimes. I happened across the movie "Destry Rides Again" on television tonight and noticed it starred Marlene Dietrich (as well as Jimmy Stewart.) That led me to YouTube where I searched the song "Lili Marlene" that she sang during WWII. That, in turn, led me to Edith Piaf and the songs "La Vie En Rose" and "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien."

I remember my father playing Edith Piaf records when I was a child. He was fluent in French, having served in the European theater in WWII, and listened to her all the time.

Mister, I don't know any of those names. You're about to die.

Oh, sorry... I do recognize one or two names there, but for some reason your post made me think of one of my favorite movie quotes...

My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

Good Morning :D

I use both FireFox and Chrome, and see very little difference between the two with speed. The latest release of Chrome may be a tad faster, but really it is the difference in how fast one can really blink an eye. I still prefer FF because it has way more features that I am used to, and there are a couple add-ons that I can't find the same thing for with Chrome.

I do have times when my internet connection really slows down, the browser is not to blame though.

Well, off to sweat, later then.,,,,,,,,,,,

Chris, did you see that amazon prime members have a bunch of instant streaming options (similar to netflix) for free with the prime membership? It's new and tells about it on the home page. I know you were a prime member so I wondered if you saw this.

I remember my father playing Edith Piaf records when I was a child. He was fluent in French, having served in the European theater in WWII, and listened to her all the time.

I have a big collection of Piaf songs,

We have a radio programme over here called "Desert Island Disks" The scenario is that you are stranded on a desert island and you have to say what 8 pieces of music you would take with you. You have a copy of the bible and the complete works of Shakespeare and you can take one other book and you can take one non practical luxury. You then have to say if you could only take one of the 8 pieces of music which would it be.

I often play this in my head and the music has been known to change but the song "Hymne à l'amour" (LINK (external link)) Has been firmly in that list for the last 20 years and I doubt will ever be replaced.

For me there some of the most beautiful song lines ever written in this song.

"Peu m'importe, si tu m'aimes
Car moi je mourrai aussi...
Nous aurons pour nous l'éternité
Dans le bleu de toute l'immensité
Dans le ciel, plus de problèmes
Mon amour, crois-tu qu'on s'aime?...
...Dieu réunit ceux qui s'aiment!"

Basically she is saying when our life on earth is finished we will spend eternity together as God will reunite those who were in love.

(Makes me cry every time.)

This gives me an Idea, Lets have a TPBM chat thread "Desert Island Disks" I will pull mine together now .....

"TPBM Chat Thread "Desert Island Disks"

You are trapped on a small desert Island but you do not have to worry about food and water there is an adequate supply.

All you have with you is a portable record player (CD player now I guess) The Bible and the complete works of Shakespear.

You are limited to just:

  • 8 pieces of music or recorded spoken word
  • I book
  • I non practical luxury.

Here is my starter for 10 (where I can find them all songs are hyperlinked)

Love Minus Zero No Limit (external link) By Bob Dylan but sung by Joan Baez

The Sisters of Mercy (external link) by Leonard Cohen

Hymne à l'amour (external link) by Edith Piaf

The Queen of the Night aria from Die Zauberflöte (external link) by Mozart Sung by Maria Callas

(TouTube have mis-labeled this it is not Lucia Popp it is Maria Callas.)
Please listen to all of this for those that dont "Do Opera" trust me you will be amazed at what the human voice can do!

Pearl Fishers Duet (external link) sung by Jussi Björling & Robert Merrill

Sextet - Lucia di Lammermoor (external link) - (I even managed to find a Potography related video for it) I could not find the version I would take to the island but it would be the Maria Callas, Ferruccio Tagliavini, Piero Cappuccilli and Bernard Ladysz recording on EMI Classic

Here's to The State of Mississippi (external link) by Phil Ochs

Sweet is the Melody (external link) by Iris DeMent

Now getting down to just 8 songs is really hard but to take that to just 1 is nigh on impossible, but with a gun pressed to my head it will have to be....

The Sisters of Mercy (external link) by Leonard Cohen

The book I would take would be.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (external link) by Winston Churchill

And my non essential or practical luxury would be

A Gibson 1942 J-45 Legend Acoustic Guitar

_______________

That is really hard to do!
