g'day folks, nice thing to get going, Neil...

I'll jot them down on a piece of paper as they come to my head, then I'll pop them out on here...

I grew up on Maria Callas, both of my parents being opera singers and fans.

"TPBM Chat Thread "Desert Island Disks"

You are trapped on a small desert Island but you do not have to worry about food and water there is an adequate supply.

All you have with you is a portable record player (CD player now I guess) The Bible and the complete works of Shakespear.

You are limited to just:
  • 8 pieces of music or recorded spoken word
  • I book
  • I non practical luxury.

Here is my starter for 10 (where I can find them all songs are hyperlinked)

Love Minus Zero No Limit (external link) By Bob Dylan but sung by Joan Baez

The Sisters of Mercy (external link) by Leonard Cohen

Hymne à l'amour (external link) by Edith Piaf

The Queen of the Night aria from Die Zauberflöte (external link) by Mozart Sung by Maria Callas

(TouTube have mis-labeled this it is not Lucia Popp it is Maria Callas.)
Please listen to all of this for those that dont "Do Opera" trust me you will be amazed at what the human voice can do!

Pearl Fishers Duet (external link) sung by Jussi Björling & Robert Merrill

Sextet - Lucia di Lammermoor (external link) - (I even managed to find a Potography related video for it) I could not find the version I would take to the island but it would be the Maria Callas, Ferruccio Tagliavini, Piero Cappuccilli and Bernard Ladysz recording on EMI Classic

Here's to The State of Mississippi (external link) by Phil Ochs

Sweet is the Melody (external link) by Iris DeMent

Now getting down to just 8 songs is really hard but to take that to just 1 is nigh on impossible, but with a gun pressed to my head it will have to be....

The Sisters of Mercy (external link) by Leonard Cohen

The book I would take would be.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (external link) by Winston Churchill

And my non essential or practical luxury would be

A Gibson 1942 J-45 Legend Acoustic Guitar

_______________

That is really hard to do!

I'll have to put mine together tonight. Heather and I are off to Disneyland this morning...

John

I just sent my little waterproof cam off to Canon service, took me long enough!! It broke while we were on vacation in August, lol. I bought it March of last year so I had to get it in before it was too late.

I only mentioned my OS as a courtesy, not as a reason yours should work. (because I knew you'd ask)

LOL!!

Sorry. Did I forget to mention that it's environmentally friendly and decomposes within 24 hr? You're on your own tomorrow . . .

Enjoy your book. She not by any chance dealing with pirates is she? (checking for series parallels again):lol:

No pirates this time, lol. HOWEVER, there were a couple of railroad spikes in the cave

Personally, I'd blame Robert. I mean think about it. Perfectly good OS, perfectly good browser. And a snake with a dubious spleen.

Have you had the bsod since he left? Didn't think so!

HAHAHAHA!!!

Neil, what a great idea. I'll do it after a cup of coffee.
I don't recognize most of your choices. Link clicking now. :)

I am with the feline, lol. I am saving the links for later listening!

ALL If you do not listen to any of the links I put in my Desert Island Disks do listen to the Maria Callas Queen of the Night Aria.

Her voice is AWESOME !

The Queen of the Night aria from Die Zauberflöte (external link) by Mozart Sung by Maria Callas

Bookmarked!

I have to say, Neil, that you are on a much higher plane of musical appreciation than myself. Being a music lover however, I look forward to listening! And, I will wait to see what everyone else posts up before sharing my own choices

NEIL good idea, I too will need to wait until later, no sound card in my work computer and I'll have to think about it for a bit.

ZANE you still getting National Geographic? Have you read the article in the latest regarding Taming the Wild, very interesting.

ALL above article is about an experiment with gray fox where they are breeding the calmer/gentler kits to see how long it takes to domesticate. The theory being this is more nature or genetic than it is nurturing. Within a 4 -5 generations the fox are wagging their tails, holding them up right, their ears stay drooped longer as they mature, and their coats are getting spotted, though they use a different term. The experiment has been going on over a few decades in Russia, beginning in secret because anything doing with the study of genetics was banned.

The article goes further into other species as well. Going by memory only 15 species of all the species in the world have domesticated. They continue to study to see if they can isolate the gene or gene group that carries this response and then to see if the similar genome is in other species.

I would have no use for the bible or Shakespeare, so if it's ok with the maker of the rules, I'd like to substitute those with a dictionary and the complete works of Mark Twain.

As for the rest of my choices, I'll think about it today and come up with something later.

You have to love tradition, this happened in 1941, we still did it when I was in the regiment and it continues to this day and will happen on St Davids Day the 1st March.

Mark Twain is definitely a step up from Shaky Pierre!

I did. Haven't tried it yet, have you?

A bit, last night. It was really jerky. Don't know if it was my internet or their server. I watched about 5 min and gave up.
