Is it fair to laugh at someone when they are out walking their pup?

Speaking of space probes and wallowing ships, here is an interesting video of the DISCOVERY Solid Rocket Booster recovery (external link) from the Atlantic.

Interesting to see the divers at work. Nice clear water... Try doing that kind of thing on the bottom of San Diego Bay when the visibility is about six inches...

There is a story that has been around for years, reportedly true, but I doubt it. It is the transcript of a radio transmission between the British and the American Navy:

British Voice : Hello unidentified vessel, we have you on radar and note that you are on collision course with us, we suggest that you maneuver 35 degrees to Port.

American Voice : This is the USS George W Bush, thank you for your information, we tend not to alter course at the whim of smaller navies so we suggest that you alter course 35 degrees to starboard.

English Voice : Sorry no can do, please alter your course 35 degrees to Port to avoid a collision.

American Voice : Listen bud, did you hear what I said, we are the USS George W Bush, the most powerful warship in the world, we carry more weaponry on board this ship than can be found in the entire Royal Navy and you expect us to move out of the way for you?

English Voice : That is an affirmative, please alter your course.

American Voice : Listen, we ain't changing our course for anyone, who the hell are you anyway.

English Voice : We are the Hartland Point Lighthouse, and suggest you make your alteration as soon as possible.

I think every Quartermaster has heard some variation of this story at sometime in their career. I think I first heard it in school in 1965...

This afternoon while waiting for the charcoal to get ready I hear a flock of Sandhill Cranes, very cool. Within 15 minutes at least another 6 flocks fly over. Very, very cool. Their sound is very distinct and can be heard from some distance.

Then a pause, so I decide to see if the 100-400 is at home or in Curt's truck, the wild turkeys have been giving him quite the show on his way to work the past several days. Yes! It is in the office on his camera, I just grabbed it in the hopes some more flocks would fly over...nothing...nothing...

By now the coals are ready to put on each side of the grill for indirect heat. I just finish splitting them when I hear that distinct call again. I throw down my work gloves on the grill work tables, grab the camera and start shooting. When I turned around, one of my gloves is smoking, it was overhanging right above the coals. But, I got several shots...it has a charred along the cuff...but, I got several shots.

The first 3 that kept circling:

More flocks kept coming:

Small flocks seem to join larger flocks:

There was some competition for airspace:

And Curt got home just in time to see the final flock:

Wow, that is a LOT of SHC, Becky. I'm sure that was fun to see. Cool planes too.

It was. They just kept coming. I think they navigate, some by the moon, if so that would explain why there were so many today. I love hearing them.

Thanks, Tim.

So I finished watching video on the SRB recovery.

1. How many miles apart do they typically splash down?

2. Seems they get a lot of perks. Private recovery vessels, private docks, etc.

Very cool to watch, though. Some of those things we know happen, just doesn't get the coverage of the launch, though.
