Thanks, Tim.

So I finished watching video on the SRB recovery.

1. How many miles apart do they typically splash down?

2. Seems they get a lot of perks. Private recovery vessels, private docks, etc.

Very cool to watch, though. Some of those things we know happen, just doesn't get the coverage of the launch, though.

1. 11.23 nautical miles apart. Every single time. Honest.

2. ...parties, free beer and keys to the employee's Saturn V rockets for the weekends.

Actually Mr. Puddlepirate isn't too far off. The landing area for both SRB's is a rectangle roughly 10 miles by 7 miles. I don't know how close they land within that target area.

Perks? Maybe, although in my experience NASA isn't run all that different than a typical military organization. Lots of neat "toys" to play with, but also lots of rules and regulations about when you can "play" with them.

This afternoon while waiting for the charcoal to get ready I hear a flock of Sandhill Cranes, very cool. Within 15 minutes at least another 6 flocks fly over. Very, very cool. Their sound is very distinct and can be heard from some distance.

Then a pause, so I decide to see if the 100-400 is at home or in Curt's truck, the wild turkeys have been giving him quite the show on his way to work the past several days. Yes! It is in the office on his camera, I just grabbed it in the hopes some more flocks would fly over...nothing...nothing...

By now the coals are ready to put on each side of the grill for indirect heat. I just finish splitting them when I hear that distinct call again. I throw down my work gloves on the grill work tables, grab the camera and start shooting. When I turned around, one of my gloves is smoking, it was overhanging right above the coals. But, I got several shots...it has a charred along the cuff...but, I got several shots.

Cool!

Real nailbiter in the NCAA tournament... SDSU-Temple 61-61 at the end of the first overtime period.

Too late to be either a SRB or an SBR. Two more launches and it's over.

No moon viewing here either. 2 inches of rain in the past 24 hours and 3 more inches coming between now and Monday.

I need to feed the critters, brush them and take some shots of Sally's latest cake project...an umbrella/duckie cake for a baby shower.

Other, little known benefits of being an employee of NASA:

  • Being able to rent Neil Armstrong's lunar suit for dinner parties.
  • Access to the "Day of Launch" BBQ at Pad 39A
  • Bungee Jump party off of the Shuttle gantries.
  • Free use of the various blast exhaust tunnels as skateboard parks.
  • Join in on the SRB "time of splash down" pool.
  • Buy tickets for the "Stowaway to the ISS" raffles.
  • Partake on the Sunday "It's What the Astronauts Eat" Buffet.
  • Be the "T Minus 2:00- 1:30" voice.
  • Watch the games on the big screens in Mission Control.
