Hi all,

Well we just got another 3 inches on top of the what was already on the ground here, so it's a lot of nearly all white backgrounds with this set...

Cardinal:

Bluejay:

Carolina Wren:

White-throated Sparrow:

Eastern Bluebird:

One of our regular Downy Woodpeckers:

And does anyone know what kind of (Downy?) Woodpecker this is? :

This brown "Downy" is new to us, and we can't ID it in our guides. Anybody?

Excellent series Kenn... they are all detailed beautifully against some tough BL... I can't say that I have ever seen a Downy with that much brown... especially on the cheeks and so dark on the breast... pretty little bird... and always good to see the White-throated Sparrow ;)

Really nice shots, I like them all!

Weird, a couple of days ago I shot one of those brown woodpeckers also, I'd never seen it either.
I looked online, but nothing came close, mine 'seemed' it was slightly larger than a Downy though, so hopefully you'll get an answer for us both.

(Also, those were all of the same birds that I was shooting in my backyard too, with the exception of the bluebirds... I wish we had them around here close)

Nicely done! :)

I may be wrong, but from what I'm seeing in my Sibley's Guide (page 312), it looks like an Adult Pacific Downy Woodpecker (male).

Described as: L. 6.75" ws 12" wt 0.95 oz
"Our smallest woodpecker; dainty with very short bill."

Hope this is helpful

:) Anne

Nice series, Kenn

Thanks all for your replies,

Annie and Randy - We did see the Pacific Hairy in our Sibley's... right colorations, but thot this unlikely so far east (St.Louis MO?) and didn't realize they might be so small, as Hairys are typically noticeably larger than Downys. Still, we don't have any other sure ID... so maybe so.

thanks again,

Kenn

Another great set, Kenn. I just love the little wren. Good shooting, my friend.

Shooting with more great Canon gear than I deserve.
I don't need a second childhood. I'm not finished yet with the first one.

Nice shots Kenn, good to see you've got all that variety despite the snow. I think the woodpecker could be a downy covered in dirt  It's about this time of year that most birds start scouting for nests, it could have been going in and out of a hole in a tree.
