If it's under 4500 I would buy it.

If it's over, I'm going to the 300-800 sigma.

And any idea on what this thing weighs ...?

No, they go for about $600-700 and zoom out to 70mm if you like.

And, they make a great companion to this new lens! :)

Can you tell that I'm stoked about this 200-400/4/1.4X/IS/L? :D

Soon as i saw this new release i immediately decided to quit waiting on a simple IS revision on the existing 100-400L and purchased a nice used 2010 UY copy today ! :p

The price of this new one will drive the cost of the old model up or at the least it sure wont drive the cost down IMO.

Regards, ;)

Around 3.4kg which is about half that of the 300-800 sigma

Wait... why would it drive the costs up? I guess if they stop making the 100-400... but I doubt they would do that.

So long as Nikon makes the 80-400mm VR you are assured that Canon will make the 100-400mm IS.

Perhaps a drawing :P"?
Don't those go for 4K and up?

Pretty sure you're thinking of the 200 f/2.0.

What I like about the 100-400 is that it is pretty doggone compact for bag storage, making it a great travel companion. It's a nice package, even if it gives up a notch of sharpness and bokeh smoothness to similar focal-length primes. It's a pretty versatile lens for the price IMHO.

Now, if I had the 70-200 Mk II, I'd probably consider using the 2X with it, but with the Mk I version of that lens along with the 2X, it can't touch the 100-400.

I agree that the 100-400 is pretty versatile for what it is. However, I think my 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS + 2x TC II is a bit more versatile, and it's about a wash on price (used). And as far as not being able to touch the 100-400, we can agree to disagree on that one.

I also don't like the 'pump' action of the 100-400. And I know that it isn't really a dust pump, I just like the internal zoom action of the 70-200 better.

Like I said, it's nice to see Canon bringing out a super-tele zoom, I just wish it had been done differently. If they announced a 100-400 f/4, I'd SERIOUSLY re-evaluate my decision to purchase a 300 f/2.8.

7D, BG-E7, BGE2x2 (both FS), 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS (FS), 50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8, 70-200 f/2.8L IS Mk I, 70-300 f/4-5.6L, 550EX, Kenko Pro300 1.4xTC

I really would like to know what the key decision points were behind why Canon selected 200-400 for the focal range for this lens. Is it because Nikon has a 200-400? Is it because they already have the 70-200 f/2.8 II? And did they throw the 1.4x TC in because they'll never build a zoom longer than 400mm?

First, what I don't see is any sort of replacement for the 100-400 f/5.6 here. While the Nikon users have often employed the 200-400 f/4 where Canon users put up the 100-400, the Nikon users pay the penalty in physical size and weight while enjoying the f/4 advantage, whether it is needed or not. So in that regard I'd still suggest Canon may still update the 100-400 just because it is such a great field lens and fills a different need.

So not only has Canon met the need currently covered by the Nikon 200-400, they have ventured into the lower super tele arena with some very interesting twists:

1. Staying with the 2x zoom ratio is an IQ decision. given their success with the 70-200 I'd expect Canon's 200-400 to surpass the Nikon 200-400 and to approach the IQ of primes of similar aperture. Primes will still be needed for speed and DOF of course.

2. The dedicated 1.4x TC will be superior to the practice of adding an outboard TC. I'd expect the combo to surpass the IQ of the 70-200 II + 1.4x III.

3. you now have two lenses on your camera body at the same time, both with L quality IQ. Imagine carrying this lens on one body and the 70-200 on the other. yummmm :D :D

4. For the first time Canon has now answered the after market offerings in the 400-600mm focal range with superior optics and without exceeding f/5.6.

5. Canon has preserved the market for the 100-400 f/5.6

5D mark iii, EF-24-105mm f/4, EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM, Speedlite 580 EX II plus 3x Yongnuo 568EX, photoflex 60" white umbrella, Westcott Apollo Orb with grid

400mm on a 1.6x body is still 400mm. sensors do not change lens physics...

If it costs over $2500.00 it costs to much IMO.
