Here's the canon news page. nothing new; just direct from Canon

http://www.canon.com/news/2011/feb07e.html (external link)

5D mark iii, EF-24-105mm f/4, EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM, Speedlite 580 EX II plus 3x Yongnuo 568EX, photoflex 60" white umbrella, Westcott Apollo Orb with grid

400mm on a 1.6x body is still 400mm. sensors do not change lens physics...

So if I sell the 100-400, I reckon I'll have to stump up about another $50 to get this lens...

I think this will replace the 100-400 since they've now upped the ante on the 70-200 range.

24-70* + 70-200 II + new 200-400 gives you 24-560mm with no break.

(*Maybe the all-time wish for IS might come true for the Brick?)

I think that's a good idea in terms of the image quality as the lens can be calibrated with the extender at the factory. The down side is that given the cost of the standalone 1.4x TC Mt III ($500) and the added convenience the feature probably costs the end user ~$800-$1000.

Canon has been manufacturing broadcast lenses with built in TCs for years so it was only a matter of time before the technology migrated to their still lenses as well.

I hope the mechanism that rolls the TC in and out is mechanical and not electronic.

Integrated 1.4 extender??? What the heck??

combines the best of both worlds. the highest quality of a 2x zoom at f/4, coupled with a dedicated 1.4x to me is the best possible way to get 200-560 with the highest quality optics. imagine a native 2.8x zoom 200-560 f/4-5.6... the annonced lens is a little less convinient than this, but I imagine there's big payoff in IQ simply because of the zoom ratio.

I will most likely never own one of these, but it is a very interesting lens. I had never heard of built in extenders before. Probably because I'm not into broadcast lenses.

This is really interesting...are the zoom and focus rings switched (like the new 70-300)?
