Far out I'm super stoked about this lens.

I was tempted by the new 300 2.8 II or 500 f/4 II but this has now replaced those two.

How does an integrated extender function? Where does it go when not in use? I'm guessing it has something to do with the bulge on the side of the lens. External moving parts you think?

Good Question:

It's going to either flip in/out on a pivot point (similar to the way the chamber on a revolver opens) or else it will be a "wheel" which has either the TC Element or No Glass depending on how it's oriented.

This is really interesting...are the zoom and focus rings switched (like the new 70-300)?

I sure hope so. with AF, I find that having the zoom ring closest to the camera body is a real boon.

400mm on a 1.6x body is still 400mm. sensors do not change lens physics...

This might be the true replacement of 400mm f/4 DO IS, which I just bought a month ago :(

I wonder how big this lens is gonna be?

I hope the mechanism that rolls the TC in and out is mechanical and not electronic.

agreed. no need to consume the camera body's battery for that. IS does a good enough job of that by itself. The good news is that the exterior knob in the photo appears to be for controling the TC :D

It looks pretty big, especially with the integrated TC

Btw, if at the long end 400mm is f/4, then it should have the same diameter as 400mm f/4 DO or 300mm f/2.8 L.
Judging from the picture, looks like this lens is almost as long as 500mm f/4 L.

*EDIT*
After spend couple of minutes thinking, I'd say that my decision of purchasing 400mm f/4 DO was right.
I wanted a super-telephoto lens with great image quality, with IS but also portable & hand-holdable.
400mm f/4 DO already fulfilled my requirements there. I have no single regrets.

200-400m f/4 IS Extender x1.4 is definitely more versatile because of the zoom & built-in extender, but it's gonna be huge & heavy.
I can't see myself carrying such a huge lens like this for travelling/hiking.

This lens is probably more suitable for soccer/football photographer whom wants extra reach & versatilities.

It will be good to see some MTF charts to see how sharp this lens on the paper.

The knob is for collar tension...

Studying the picture more closely, it looks as if the mechanism will be hinged at the point of the protruding rounded triangle with the TC / NO TC stacked over/under.

That would be a nice lens for high school sports. I talked to a Nikon guy that was shooting Lacrosse with the 200-400 and he said it was great for that sport. Just another dad with a camera. :-)

Their 200-400 pretty much dominates the airshow circuit for Nikon shooters...

unfortunately i don't see this lens being released under $8k. otherwise, i'd love to see the lens in practice and could only imagine how flexible it could be in the field.
