While sitting around waiting for raptors near Lake Henshaw CA I had this friendly bird drop in for a visit.

1. I never knew there were greater/lesser variants of this bird; cool!
2. That first shot totally looks like Snoopy doing his buzzard impression from the top of the doghouse :)

Thanks for sharing these!

I believe there are subspecies but from I can tell this is the dominant species.

Now that you mention it that first one does remind me of Snoopy. This time of year with no snakes they will hop on a rock and hope a lizard snack pops out.

Thanks Don. Don't think a lizard did pop out from under that rock!

Thanks! I was shooting a golden eagle at some distance so I had the 100-400+1.4x TC combo on the camera. I had only used the TC on primes but just before I left on this trip someone posted some impressive images with this combo. I have to say the IQ is far better than I expected.

Thanks. About 100 feet or so. This were shot at 400mm + 1.4x TC or 560mm on the 1.3x crop 1D.

Thanks. we don't have them in Virginia either. It was a real treat to catch one on this trip. I got over 70 shots of him and will have some large prints made of the best shots once I can check them out on the good monitor at home.

The last is my favorite. I like how visually the rock and bird make parallel lines.
