There is a wetlands area adjacent to a large commercial development (Cosco, movie multiplex, etc) about five miles from my house. I stopped by to have a look on Sunday, and found numerous egrets, some swans, ducks, and some sort of heron. I had my 20D with a 70-200/2.8 and 1.4TC with me and got these shots. I'll post some more after I get a chance to edit them and put them up on pbase. I'm really starting to enjoy this kind of photography and have become convinced that I need a proper wildlife lens. I'm seriously thinking about ordering the 100-400, and soon!

The 100-400 lens would be helpful to you.

Also, take some time at the same pond location and find a better spot to shoot from. Ideally, it will be a spot with no tall grass in front. Of course, if it is too exposed, then the birds will see you, so a little camouflage around the camera and photographer might be called for.

Thanks Bob. Sounds like good advise. Next time I get over there (hopefully with a longer lens) I'm going to try getting closer to the edge of the pond to avoid the grass. This was mostly a combined shopping trip/recon mission to get an idea of the area. The birds seem to have become accustomed to the traffic noise, so the sound of my camera wasn't a problem.

If it's that close to so many people it might be quite easy to get some shots. Alas, it looks like the borders of the pond are over-grown. I hope you can find a clear space to shoot from. Good luck!

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Considering your limitations, the photos represent pretty good captures. Nice action shots.
