After a quick search I haven't really come up with the answers I'm after and am slightly confused. Let me know if this belongs in another thread or if it's been asked and answered elsewhere.

I’m after

(A) a wireless remote shutter for my 50D with a bulb lock facility
(B) a way to remote shutter OCF
(c) a way to remote shutter with the camera mounted

I’ve noticed there are some cheap combos out there that would allow me to explore (I think) some of these options all in one? To date I’m aware of Hahnel TF 2.4GHz and YongNuo 602 options but I’m not keen on the YongNuo as to use the bulb facility you have to continually depress the button. Not practical for long exposures and the Hahnel is the two press operation, once to open the shutter, once to close.

For (A), this is a no brainer for me. Find something suitable and purchase :) Brands / advice welcome though. To combine (A) with (B) and (C) is where I get confused.

For (B) I read somewhere that inherent in this wireless combo set up one can’t remote trigger the camera and flash using the included transmitter as a remote shutter trigger and mounting another transmitter on the hot shoe. There’s a shutter lag as the flash fires first, this is a general issue with remote triggers?

So something like this wouldn’t work?
http://www.amazon.co.uk …TF8&qid=1296483446&sr=1-1 (external link)

The common workaround is a separate shutter release on another channel to achieve this and using the supplied transmitter mounted on the hot shoe to trigger just the flash(es). Is this true? If I wanted to wirelessly trigger the camera and flash I’d have to have the shutter receiver stuck hanging out the side or attached to the tripod or something similar?

For (C) i.e. self portraits or second curtain flash on a tripod, would I have this lag issue? Would the same transmitter trigger the shutter and flash correctly in sequence? With the Hahnel I don’t think I can do this as the flash receiver does not transmit on the underside i.e. the hotshoe is only on the top. I’m not sure of the YongNuos.

I was looking at these options for (c)

http://www.amazon.co.uk …TF8&qid=1297166722&sr=8-1 (external link)
http://www.amazon.co.uk …TF8&qid=1296483342&sr=1-1 (external link)

Combo options are about £30-50 in the UK and I’m not sure if I go this route or buy cheap flash triggers and a remote trigger with bulb lock facility separately.

Really stuck!

Wish I had more time for this photography thing....

If you want to remotely trigger a camera which in turn triggers a remote flash, you use one of two setups, 1) two independent sets of transmitters and receivers, one for the camera and one for the flash with each set on different channels, or 2) one set of transceivers that can do "relay" mode, i.e. automatically switch from receiver to transmitter mode.

Option 1 is pretty self explanatory. You'll need a transmitter in your hand set to one channel to trigger a receiver, on the same channel, connected to the camera via a remote release cable. The second transmitter, set to a differnt channel, sits in the camera hot shoe and will trigger its receiver, also on the same channel as the 2nd transmitter, to fire the remote flash.

Option 2 requires a transceiver, like the Pocket Wizard devices, that can automatically switch from receiver mode to transmitter mode once it's been triggered, to relay the trigger to a remote flash receiver. For this setup, you'll need a transmitter or transceiver in your hand set to one channel. The transceiver, sitting in the camera hotshoe and also connected to the remote release terminal, will also be set to the same channel. Some devices, like the PW Plus II, will automatically switch to relay mode using the next higher channel to trigger the remote flash receiver which must also be set to the same channel. And others, like the PW MultiMax, will automatically switch to relay mode using whatever channel you have selected to trigger the remote flash receiver (but different from the one set on the handheld transmitter).

Quantum is the only other brand that I know of which has this relay mode feature so you'll need to double check if this feature is available on the units you're interested in. If not, then you're only option would be to use Option 1 above.
