The detail difference you're seeing may be contrast, not "softfocus".

I've also compared apps and IMHO, Oloneo comes out on top. But that's not the subject of the thread, so no further on that.

However, I will say this. Photomatix was the undisputed benchmark for a long time. But all over the net I am seeing Photomatix compared to this and to that and in the majority of cases, Photomatix seems to be losing favor and falling by the wayside.

In comparison to many new HDR apps available, Photomatix really doesn't appear to be that good any more. Many loyalists cling to it out of tradition, perhaps habit, but in comparison, it's really not that good.

IMHO, the only attribute photomatix still leads in is its de-ghosting feature.
