If you're stressing over this happening once, then prepare to start losing your hair now haha. This isn't anything new and happens quite often. The sooner you get used to it and accept it, the sooner you can focus on the people who are actually following through. I just checked out your work and it's definitely not bad, Keep at it and you'll eventually get people who follow through on their word and aren't just saying it to be nice.

If your replies are similar to your post above, you will not inspire confidence and it is not surprising you do not get much work. Broken English and poor grammar may be holding you back.

Your flickr account is not bad. There is room for growth as with many of us. I have no more room to talk about needing to make improvements than anyone else.
You do have potential though, however self esteem and how you compose yourself makes a big difference. FInd the confidence to BELIEVE that you can do it, you'll find good things happen.

At least you did not book the appointment, drive half an hour and not have them show up. This has happened to me a few to many times. I normally take an appointment retainer now.

And I get appointment requests all the time with no follow through.

How are they seeing you? As a friend with a camera who takes good photos, or as a (professional) photographer? My guess, since you quoted $40, they were seeing you as a person with a camera.

Would you pay someone who tinkered on an old car to fix your car because it was having problems, or you can look at it as, If you had a problem with your transmission and you knew it was going to be expensive and a "professional" said they can fix it for $50, when everyone else was quoting you a few hundred at least - would you feel confident?

Her Dayne,

Sorry about the POTN members who didn't notice that you're deaf.
Of course, that means your language skills developed in a different way to most people.
Apologies, on their behalf.

As to your question, MANY people think that taking "nice" photos is easy.
The truth is, taking an ordinary/dull/unimaginative/low-quality photo is easy.
Part of our (and your) job is to educate people about GREAT photographs.
That way, maybe "photographer" will still be the name of a job, in the years to come....
And, don't worry for one second if someone expects you to take photos for free.
That type of person is everywhere!
Regards,
Simon

I understand you're in "I am building My Portfolio" stage...I like the photos on your Flickr, keep shooting!

One thing (well ONE OF the things) I learnt from Lawrence Chan at http://www.tofurious.com/ (external link) is how to deal with those who constantly ask for discounts, etc, and I suggest you read his blog posts thoroughly.

He also had a very good example of a fellow photographer named Sarah (external link) who was looking to built her portfolio, I suggest you read it, too.

I get people who think I still charge $150 with CD included from 4 years ago...ummm, no! They haven't booked me then, they won't book me now, so while I'm being polite with them and all, I just do not invest a lot of time in them...

Good luck!
