just something that you should know, with canon. EV controls of the canon are not linked. So you can EV ambient light separate form the flash EV. Some other systems, you will need to shoot in M to do it, with canon you can leave it in Ettl.

Be aware that the 580 EXII has a new style hotshoe mount compared to the 580 EX. The 580EXII mount is a cam-style lock and some users have reported losing hotshoe contact during shooting, resulting in erratic behavior, including losing ETTL, full power flash, etc. I have one 580EX and two 580EXII's and just had one of the EXII's suffer this problem. Dropped it off at the Canon repair facility in NJ - flat fee repair of $110. I should receive it back in a week, and hope that the problem has been addressed. There are several reports of such problems floating around on the web, and some DIY fixes. I would not personally open my flash unit to monkey around in there, between the potential to cause damage and the risk of electrical shock. I mention the issue because, if you are trying to learn how to operate the flash and you get results that seem inconsistent with your reading material and the user's manual, consider that the flash may not be functioning properly. I'm not saying the flash will fail you, I'm just pointing ut that it is very frustrating having unpredictable results and thinking you're to blame when it is actually a faulty flash.

Just thought I'd get you all psyched up for your new flash adventure!

Once you get the hang of ETTL and manual flash, you will want to get the flash off of the camera hotshoe and then you will want another flash....

I would suggest this book:

and this, as a supplemental reference to the user guide:

I would strongly recommend watching Canon's Professional Network Speedlite Masterclass.
