I am thinking of upgrading from my 40D to a 7D, but want to know if there's any news at all about a successor to the 7D popping up anytime soon?

Thanks guys.

No news but lots of rumoring. Head on up to the rumor forum and peek in a few threads.

BTW.. Canon is always very tight lipped about new bodies. In all my years of following Canon hardware, no one has had everything right. There are bits and pieces of truth, but lots of junk as well.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

If you can afford the 7D, buy it. Ist a great camera - but wait:

  • there will be a successor of the 7D soon (with swivel-display) and it will be a much better camera - so wait
  • plus you should consider, there will also be a successor of the 7D Mk II (with 249 AF-Points) - a much better camera, so wait and
  • i am very sure, there will be also a better camera after the 7D Mk III - you definitely have to wait... ;);)

or you buy the 7D - a great camera, gives you the ability to take great pictures. Instead: you'll be waiting forever. There will always be a successor...

Cheers

Nobody knows when the successor will be out.
I think the point teraflop was making is you could wait forever, because the next version will always be better than the current one.

It is commonly believed that the 7D will be on a three year life cycle, so we might see a replacement next year.

I doubt a 7D replacement will come for another year at the very least, but even if it does the current 7D will still sell. I'd expect a 7D2 to debut at a much higher MRSP, and for the 7D prices to remain fairly healthy for a good while after its release. Roughly similar to what happened with the 70-200mm MkI and MkII. Everywhere that still had stock of the MkI basically preserved its price point. Bottom line is that you're getting an awesome camera that will keep a healthy second hand value for a good long while.

No replacement expected before late 2012 and the rumor-mill is quiet as well. Safe buy.

To OP---according to canonrumors.com Canon will have an instant rebate on the 7d starting Feb. 20. If it's true you'd save yourself $200 if you wait just a few days.

I really don't think the 7d will last another 18 months

No one thought the 5d2 would last as long as it did, but we're already looking at Sep 2011 as the earliest for the 5d3. That's 3 years. You never know...

3 years is a pretty common lifespan for Canon's single-digit bodies.
