Anyone have any experience with these. I saw the Orbis but I don't like the way you have to hold the flash or add that frame.

Any feedback would be great.

Thanks
R.

Here is my experience with Ray Flash: Ray Flash review (external link)

Orbis delivers better light quality, but looses much more light power. Also, Orbis has universal fit, whereas Ray Flash custom fitted to a flash and camera.

This was my review of the Ray Flash adapter from a while ago.

https://photography-on-the.net …41386&highlight=ray+flash

I've since had a chance to work with an Orbis and even though it can be a bit awkward to use handheld, the quality of light and coverage are better and you get a much better rendition of that classic ring light effect.

If you do the mod to the Ray Flash to even out the coverage you'll find that the quantity of light from the Orbis is about the same. If you use the Ray Flash unmodded then it's easy to be fooled into thinking the output is greater, when in fact it's just that the output is greater in the hotter spots but you still have rapid falloff and a dead zone.

GreenLi,
Do you find the orbis flash to be difficult to work with since it's difficult to attach to the camera? To be honest that's my biggest reservation.

TMR,
I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the mod you're referring to. What is the mod?

R.

I've seen many methods. Mine (as is detailed in my review) uses slices of neutral density gels to reduce output of the hot spot, evening out the coverage.

If I ended up keeping the Ray Flash I would have made a disk of some kind that attaches to the front of the Ray Flash with the nd gels in the right place.

TMR,
thanks for the info and your review. I read it and all the posts that followed.

Let me ask you something. Since I'm trying to educate myself with lighting and related information, in this case why would you want shadows around the whole subject. In those posts, you talked about the mouse ears and how your mod fixed the issue. I also saw the images after the fix, so why is that ok? I get the even part, meaning if you are going to have shadows make sure they are even. Is it purely a creative look?

Again thanks.

Cool! Even though the bracket is a bit clunky it's a lot better than trying to juggle your camera and the Orbis handheld.

In the studio I like to mount the flash with Orbis on a wheeled light stand with a battery pack or a Speedfire. I just wheel the Orbis around, park it, point my lens through it and shoot. Using the battery pack or Speedfire give me fast recycle times and lots of battery life.

Show us some images once you've had a chance to use it a bit.

I finally spared some time to summarize all my thoughts on both units. Hope it is helpful:

Thanks. Good comparison and very much in line with what I found when comparing the two.
